Today we are taking a look at the Max 5G from Thermaltake. The Max 5G is taking a different approach to the external drive enclosures. Where most others seem to aim at making the enclosure as compact as possible, the Max 5G is adding additional cooling in for good measure. This should have an impact on long-term drive health if warm hard drives concern you. The Max 5G comes with dual 80mm fans and blue LED highlights in addition to its USB 3.0 connectivity.
Intel took the SSD realm by storm this week with the long awaited release of their first 510 series SATA 3 SSD. Although consumers were anxious for the news, reviewers had to remain tight lipped having received their pre-release sample a day or so prior and being sworn to silence until Intels release date of 29 Feb 11. We can say first hand that this was a very difficult task as Intel floored reviewers on their disassembly of the SSD itself. Situated front and center was a Marvell 9174 SATA 3 controller soldered to the SSD circuit board (PCB) rather than the Intel controller that everyone had expected.
Plextor is probably best known for their optical drives so it may come as a surprise to some that they also offer SSDs in their product line. Their most recent line is the M2 series which features a Marvell controller and a 6Gbps interface. It would be fair to say that ADATA aren’t known as one of the more established SSD brands however they have had a range of SandForce powered units in retail for some time now. Today we are testing their 256GB SSD and will be putting it through many synthetic and real world situations.
