For those who choose a laptop as their primary computer, storage space is an eternal problem. Between games, music, movies and pictures, the gigabytes can disappear before you know it. While this is true of any PC, notebooks have it doubly rough: they usually only have space for one drive, and that one has to fit the 2.5 inch form factor. A few days ago we reviewed the first serious attempt by Seagate to enter the consumer SSD market with their 600 SSD model which was surprisingly good for a first attempt especially since together they also launched two extra SSD models the 600 Pro SSD and 1200 SSD both of which are considered as enterprise-class solutions. However in order to cover pretty much every user out there Seagate did not stop there and so they also released their 3rd Generation of 2.5" Hybrid drives they like to refer to as SSHD (Solid State Hybrid Drives) which much like their Momentus XT predecessor are mostly aimed towards laptop owners who want to have the best of both worlds meaning the low cost and high capacity ratio of HDDs coupled with the superior performance of SSDs. Currently Seagate has two SSHD models in the market the 1TB Laptop SSHD and the 500GB Laptop Thin SSHD which we have on our test bench today.
The Seagate Laptop Thin SSHD 500 GB hard disk drive is part of the third generation of 2.5" hybrid drives that combine a hard disk drive and flash memory to act as a non-volatile cache to store the user's most frequently accessed data. Let's test it!

We recently took a look at the Seagate GoFlex Ultra Portable Drive which for us came in the latest and greatest USB 3.0 form. While testing may have been necessary to prove the performance claims regarding the Seagate GoFlex Slim 320GB USB 3.0 hard drive, the other key selling point is blatantly obvious with just a casual glance. The GoFlex Slim lives up to its name, as it is ultra-compact in all directions, especially its thickness. At just 9mm thick it is about as thin as some bare 2.5" drives.
