SSD’s are finally getting a firm grip within the market, helped in part by dropping prices and increasing capacities. If you have been holding off on upgrading then perhaps today we can change your mind. We would go so far as to say that from our experience, adding an SSD as a boot drive to a system is one of the best upgrades you could make.

Its tiny size makes it an easy addition to any home or small office and it packs an impressive amount of power for backup, storage, and other basic server functions. Add some RAM, hard drives, and an operating system, and you'll have a server that is customizable for your environment without spending an excessive amount of cash.

Today I am going to be looking at a product from a manufacturer that whilst they are a household name is less well known for their involvement in the computer hardware industry. The manufacturer is Toshiba and the product is one of their Store Steel external hard drives, this one in particular is 320GB.

USB 2.0 is most popular due to wide compatibility but transfer speeds are slow in today's standard. Other options like FireWire, eSATA and the recently introduced USB 3.0 offer much more bandwidth but of course many computers don't support these various interfaces. Until now, the tradeoff has been speed versus compatibility. But with Seagate's new FreeAgent GoFlex portable hard drive, you can get the best of both worlds. The GoFlex drive ships with a standard USB 2.0 interface but what makes this drive unique is the ability to remove the interface and replace it with a complete different interface.

One of the leading pioneers bringing SSD technology to the mainstream marketplace has been OCZ, and the item we have for review today is their Agility 2 drive based on the SandForce 1200 controller. The SandForce-based Agility 2 replaces the previous generation Indilinx-controlled Agility that Rutledge reviewed last year. Based on specifications, the Agility 2 is very similar to OCZ's Vertex 2, like the 50Gb model that Shawn had a look at last month. OCZ offers these models in a wide variety of sizes, ranging from 40/50/100/200/400Gb on the standard drives to 60/90/120/180/240/480Gb on their Extended Capacity versions.

SilverStone has pioneered a whole new type of hardware in the HDDBoost. The Idea is simple the execution is very well done and overall is quite a nice product. Installing it was far simpler than I had expected and there was no additional input really needed.

Being known for sending products back with a note explaining why a product is junk, I will never recommend it to anyone. But obviously something has changed in my line of thinking or else you wouldn’t even be reading this review to begin with. To start things off, Corsair’s new F40 is not a reduced channel POS that should have never seen the light of day. This is a real SSD with all of the channels sending and receiving data just like the big boys that I normally cover. That means that most of the performance is there...not all of the performance since smaller flash is a bit slower, but enough is retained to make the F40 worthy of your time.

Ah, good old USB 3.0 is popping up more and more, I think it’s finally coming into its own?! Ok, it hasn’t been that widely accepted yet, but it’s slowly getting there. Today for review I’ve got a new product from Thermaltake for USB 3.0, it’s the BlacX 5g which is a hard drive dock. This dock can use both 3.5” or 2.5” hard drives and SSDs. Included with the dock are two rubber hard drive protectors as well to help protect your drives in transport or when not in use.
