Today we are going to look at a very impressively designed drive caddy which can convert both 2.5 inch mechanical and solid state drives into RAID arrays. It is also built to withstand serious abuse and to fit inside a standard 3.5 inch drive bay. If you have several older drives gathering dust then this might just be the performance boost you need for a new system build.
For those taking the plunge on a new SSD, it's worth it to take a look at this product from Icy Dock. It's one of the simplest methods out there to fit a 2.5” drive into a 3.5” drive bay. There are no pass-thru connectors to worry about, and installation takes literally just a few seconds.
If Icy Dock MB994SP-4S is offering more than what you require then Icy Dock MB991IK-B is another alternative solution for you. In short Icy Dock MB991IK-B could be considered as a simplified version of Icy Dock MB994SP-4S which is only able to support a single 2.5" drive bay in 3.5" form factor instead of quad drive bays supportability in 5.25" form factor.
The Icy Dock MB996SP-6SB 6 in 1 "ToughArmor" backplane cage offers solid aluminum construction that not only protects the hard drives but provides passive cooling. The MB996SP-6SB fits six 2.5” SSDs or hard drives into the space of a 5.25” bay in the hot swap capable drive bays. Active cooling is provided by a 40mm fan mounted to the back, the fan speed can be set to off, high, or low speed. Indicator lights are also present on the hard drive bays to show HDD power and activity. Power is provided by two 4-pin Molex connections or two 15-pin SATA power connectors with the included adapters. The 6 in 1 "ToughArmor" backplane has an individual SATA data connector for each drive bay, allowing the backplane to be used with any hard drive or RAID controller.
