A 2.5-inch external hard disk can provide that extra storage you need when you're on-the-go. Adata is one of the players in this market, so we tested three of their USB 3.0 DashDrive models with 500 GB of storage, the HV610, HD710 and HE720. They don't differ that much in terms of price, so we're curious to find out how they perform and what sets them apart.

Intel has refreshed their SSD line with the release of the 335 Series that, while still using the SF-2281 controller, throws something new into the mix with their 20nm NAND flash. How this impacts performance is exactly what we set out to see in addition to giving our overall impressions of the drive and see if it's worthy of your hard earned dollars.

We were very impressed by the 256 GB Samsung 840 Pro when it came out late September. It was the fastest at the time, but OCZ has caught up already with the Vector SSD. The other capacities of the 840 Pro are equally outstanding in terms of performance, all at the top of their class.

In this review PCSTATS will be testing the 256GB Crucial M4 SSD, a 6Gb/s SATA III drive rated by the manufacturer for read speeds of up to 500MB/s and write speeds of 260MB/s (sequential). Crucial's M4 uses a Marvell 88SS9174-BLD2 controller which supports a host interface of 6Gb/s SATA III and includes a range of passive flash management tools.

Samsung is the only company able to deliver a drive to the consumer that is completely manufactured in house. Samsung manufactures their own exclusive tri-core “MDX” controller and writes the firmware for it. Samsung is the world’s largest producer of NAND flash memory which enables them to keep the largest cost component in house as well. All this puts Samsung in a unique position giving them the ability to produce the product for less than any other drive manufacturer.

WD’s Black 4TB is the sort of product that doesn’t need much of an introduction – it speaks for itself. We’re dealing with a standard-sized desktop hard drive that sports a market-leading 4TB of storage. That’s 4,000GB, for those not paying enough attention. It’s impressive on paper, so let’s see how it fares in our benchmarks.
