Western Digital has slimmed down its portable My Passport line-up and sent over the latest 500GB model for testing
In 1953, engineers in IBM’s California-based laboratory invented the very first hard drive. Since that first disk drive, technological advances have been made at an astonishing rate, with data capacity increasing and size and price decreasing exponentially, year on year. 60 years on, the hard drives of today are unrecognizable from the first models, which took up an entire room. Hard drives today are measured in terms of gigabytes and terabytes, rather than megabytes-an amount of data that would have been almost unimaginable in the early history of computers. Here we take a look back at the evolution of the hard drive as it grew from 5MB to 4TB.
As much as we would like to say that we wouldn’t have believed it if we hadn’t seen it, the truth is that this is one of those finds that has to be seen in operation first hand before anyone will believe it…but it was right there before our eyes. Today at Computex 2013 in Taipei, Taiwan, ADATA introduced their new line of enterprise SSDs. One SSD in particular, the ADATA SX2000, caught our eye right off. The sticker on the SX2000 depicts a capacity of 1600GB and, unlike just about every other notebook form factor SSD on the planet, the SX2000 has a PCIe 2.0 x4 interface rather than SATA. This SSD is the size of any typical drive you might see in a notebook.

SanDisk has done a really nice job on the Marvell 88SS9187 controller firmware by squeezing out some great performance. Of course SanDisk has a great deal of expertise when it comes to flash memory storage solutions and holds over 4,500 patents. We saw sequential reads hit a touch over 520MB/s and writes clear the 520MB/s mark on the larger SanDisk Extreme II drives...
Concluding our coverage of SanDisk Extreme II flagship SSD, we look at the largest capacity sized offered, 480GB.
The 256GB capacity class is the sweet spot for enthusiasts. This size maximizes the price, capacity and performance ratio. SanDisk has high hopes for Extreme II, but in order to sell these drives in big numbers, it has to do well here.
