It's really a big surprise to all of us the how far NAS devices have gone in the past 3 years alone not only because as we speak most offices and households where we're located own at least one but also because in 2014 alone manufacturers released roughly the same number of new models as they did in the two years prior (2012-2013). We did expect this to happen in the long run since let's face it NAS servers offer many things an HTPC (or even an mITX system) really can't such as size, reduced power consumption, price (depends on the model of course) and out of the box use thanks to the preinstalled OS and the plethora of available (and free) applications. Our focus lately has been on some of the highest-end models to hit the market lately aimed for SMB (small business) use but since many of you asked with us today we have one of the latest low/mid-end NAS servers by QNAP the TurboNAS TS-431.
We've seen the large 960GB M500 and the smaller 120GB drives. Today we look at the sweet spot for enthusiasts and power users, the 256GB class model. Sold with 240GB of user capacity, does the mid size model suffer from the same performance issues that plague the 120GB model or does this one take after big brother?
In this review we will be taking a closer look at the Crucial RealSSD C300 128GB solid state drive, which in addition to a 355MB/s maximum read speed, also offers a 140MB/s maximum write speed. The way that Crucial is able to offer such a high speed product is by being one of the few drive manufacturers to take advantage of SATA 6Gbps technology.
A week or so ago, we published a review of the MyDigital BP4 that was ‘ a wolf in sheep’s clothing’ in a way as it was a 120GB SSD with an exterior label claiming to be 240GB.After posting the review, MyDigitalSSD called and insisted on sending the REAL 240GB BP4, claiming that it’s performance would be something to write about. The RevoDrive is a single expansion card that is effectively two SSDs (each with its own controller) coupled to an onboard RAID controller (configured in RAID 0) that uses a PCI Express interface to providing blazing fast transfer rates. The sample provided for review is a 50GB unit rated for quite impressive read speeds of up to 540MB/s and write speeds of up to 450MB/s.

Our recent RAID review of three Intel 520 SSDs on the Highpoint 2720SGL 6Gbps RocketRAID Controller opened our eyes as we didn’t think performance of 1.5GB/s could be reached with three SSDs. Those results were just a taste of what was yet to come as we simply had to throw eight Crucial M4 256GB SATA 3 SSDs onto the RocketRAID for a true run. How does 3GB/s performance grab you for a start? Unbelievable? That’s what we thought as well but we did it!
Synology is a large NAS manufacturer with several products. Looking at the numbers, Synology rivals both QNAP and Thecus in terms of the number of products available and in some categories outpaces them in truly innovative offerings. One such area that stands out is Synology's Disk Expansion products that allow you to double the drive count of your existing NAS with an add-on enclosure. I can't really tell you why Synology hasn't been a larger target on our radar, because I don't really know, but their blip is gaining more attention moving forward.
