There once was a time, not so long ago, where an Intel SSD was the gold standard against which all other consumer SSDs were measured. That didn’t last long as other drive makers improved quickly and a handful of third party controllers emerged to level the playing field to anyone willing to put out a drive of their own. Since then, Intel has kept pace, mainly with third party controllers, but slowly invested more interest into the enterprise market. Now, Intel’s work in that area along with the hardware is being made available in a consumer drive with the 730 Series. Intel took has taken the DC S3500/S3700 drives from enterprise space and moved them down into the enthusiast market space and that is how the Intel 730 series was born...

The Seagate Barracuda LP 2TB SATA hard drive is an excellent choice for putting together a ‘green’ external storage solution. Putting this drive in an external enclosure, or better yet a NAS, will allow for some energy savings, especially if the drive is accessed frequently. I can definitely see myself putting a LP drive (or more) in a NAS to replace my expensive home server.

The Western Digital My Book VelociRaptor Duo shows what's possible when you combine Thunderbolt with a traditional hard drive, you get an external hard drive with extremely high transfer rates. It's technically possible to daisychain several of them to increase the speed even more. So if you want external storage with a Thunderbolt connector, then the Western Digital My Book VelociRaptor Duo is a great solution.

Over the past year, the SSD product landscape has changed drastically. Performance has gone up, prices have dropped, and new competitors have emerged in the market place. One company that has been around through this and more is Samsung. While it's not the biggest consumer brand for SSDs, Samsung has a big presence in the industry. As a long term supplier of SSDs to Apple, Dell, and HP; Samsung has had a lot of experience building and designing SSDs. Today we'll be looking at one of Samsung's consumer oriented SSDs, the 256GB 830 series, to see how it compares.

Solid State Drives are becoming more and more common. I think I big reason for this is because people realize that they will give them the performance boost that they want when added to their system. The market seems to be flooded with drives and it is really hard to choose which one to get. One of the main determining factors to many people is the price. Kingston’s new HyperX 3K solid state drive is designed to be very inexpensive as it uses cost effective NAND rated for 3000 program / erase cycles. We will explain what all that means later on in the review. This drive still sports the very popular SandForce SF-2281 controller and of course the quality you expect from Kingston. Read on as we check it out!

PNY's Prevail 240GB SSD is supposed to ship with 3K P/E cycle flash, but we found a nice surprise in our sample. It shipped with 5K P/E cycle flash.

The one question the always seems to resurface as we travel spreading the SSD word, is how an SSD is so much better than a hard drive. Even today, we are still at a point that this question seems to be the first question asked, even before the obvious, “What is an SSD?” As it does most, we think the answer may surprise you and will most likely have you jumping off that fence and buying your first SSD today. In today’s article, we are going to explore the single most important reason to replace your computer’s hard drive with an SSD. Follow along as we describe something that so many are missing out on.

We were picked up from the Hsin Chu high speed rail station by our friendly marketing contact at Kingston who drove us directly to Kingston's ten SMT-line ready Taiwan factory, which is about 15 minutes from our entry point back to Taipei. We were told that this factory only (we laughed when Kingston said its Taiwan facility is a small operation) has 600 employees.
With the introduction set, it brings us to the reason for this article and that is our factory tour. We were exclusively invited into the Kingston factory where few media have been and got shown the process of making an SSD from start to finish. Due to media restrictions, we were not allowed to produce a video of the tour, but we were allowed to take photos. Obviously Kingston is a market leader in memory and SSD products and there is plenty of sensitive machinery and such - and we needed to respect that and their rules.

For users with older based systems running IDE controllers, a device has cropped up that opens up some extra functionality.

A 2.5-inch external hard disk can provide that extra storage you need when you're on-the-go. Adata is one of the players in this market, so we tested three of their USB 3.0 DashDrive models with 500 GB of storage, the HV610, HD710 and HE720. They don't differ that much in terms of price, so we're curious to find out how they perform and what sets them apart.
