A few days ago we reviewed the first serious attempt by Seagate to enter the consumer SSD market with their 600 SSD model which was surprisingly good for a first attempt especially since together they also launched two extra SSD models the 600 Pro SSD and 1200 SSD both of which are considered as enterprise-class solutions. However in order to cover pretty much every user out there Seagate did not stop there and so they also released their 3rd Generation of 2.5" Hybrid drives they like to refer to as SSHD (Solid State Hybrid Drives) which much like their Momentus XT predecessor are mostly aimed towards laptop owners who want to have the best of both worlds meaning the low cost and high capacity ratio of HDDs coupled with the superior performance of SSDs. Currently Seagate has two SSHD models in the market the 1TB Laptop SSHD and the 500GB Laptop Thin SSHD which we have on our test bench today.
With the new Travelstar 5K1500 2.5’’ drive from HGST we get plenty of storage space and a silent drive which can be used in most notebooks, our gaming PCs for secondary storage purposes or in game consoles if we use to install a lot of content on them.
At Storage Vision 2013 in January, SMART Storage Systems made a splash with the announcement of the CloudSpeed 1000 and 1000E enterprise SSDs. We have been patiently waiting for our chance to put these drives through their paces. In SSD time, it felt like an eternity but with our previous experience with their Optimus SSDs, we knew the wait would be worth it. Plus, SMART had a busy summer, as their acquisition by Sandisk was finalized just last week, so we will cut them some slack.
As you may have guessed, the CloudSpeed series focuses on enterprise server and cloud computing environments. Specifically, they are optimized for the mixed workload conditions that typical enterprise SSDs encounter. The CloudSpeed series is outfitted with the features you would expect from an enterprise SSD, such as error correction and detection, power loss protection, data path protection, data fail recovery and AES 256-bit encryption. SMART also throws in thermal management for good measure.
OCZ's Vector 128GB is one of the highest performing drives on the market today in RAID 0. Now at under $1 per GB, it could be a setup to consider.

There have been a number of incarnations of the Force Series drives from Corsair with the first having the SandForce 1200 series controller. Hence the name. Most have been performance focused and were the Corsair flagship drives for a time, a title currently held by their Neutron GTX line. The new Force LS series is intended more as a budget friendly drive and changes things up with a Phison controller running the show that's supported by Toshiba 19nm NAND. This isn't a configuration we've tested before so it'll be interesting to see how it fares.
Corsair teamed up with Phison to add another level to the Force brand. The new Force LS uses Phison's S8 controller and Toshiba NAND flash.
