Geared toward servers and data centers, the Edge Boost Server 7mm SSD utilizes an enterprise-level LSI-SandForce controller to achieve strong read/write and IOPS speeds. The SATA 6 Gb/s interface is rated to achieve up to 560 MB/s sequential reads and 530 MB/s sequential writes (240GB model — other capacities vary). Random 4K read speeds are stated as 45,000 IOPS, with random 4K write speeds of 80,000 IOPS (240GB model — other capacities vary).

I want you to imagine for a moment that your laptop or desktop has just crashed. Every personal document, every e-mail, every file and photo is gone. All of the data on the hard drive is gone. . . What do you do? Attempt to recover the data by yourself? So I ask the question "When does your data become important and what do you do with your valuable data?

Data Rot! Every time a compact disk gives up the ghost and you some files, you've experienced it. All digital storage technologies are susceptible to data rot, AKA bit rot. Benchmark Reviews recently highlighted reliability issues that SSD users are experiencing; their flash memory failures have been an eye-opening experience for consumers. We all know how a hard drive "crashes", but we're not so clear on how electrons disappear. Large data centers have been acutely aware of this problem, and the industry devised ways of eliminating it. Now, Infortrend is making that technology available to consumers, with their new EonNAS series. The key to data integrity is in the ZFS file system, that's part of the Sun-based OS installed in the EonNAS 1100. Plus, it performs data deduplication on the fly! Read on to find out more...

All digital storage technologies are susceptible to data rot. Just ask the multimedia giant Pixar, who saw dozens of critical files disappear before their eyes, during production of the movie "Toy Story". Modern hard drives are remarkably reliable devices, but most have an average uncorrectable read error rate of 10^14. That means one read failure for every 12TB of data. The drive doesn't "crash"; it just gives you corrupted data every now and then. The only way around this is to continuously test the data, and scrub the errors as they occur. The storage industry deployed this technology in large data centers, and now Infortrend is making it available to consumers, with their new EonNAS series. The Sun-based OS in the EonNAS Pro 850x also has some other tricks up its sleeve, like data deduplication. Read on to find out more...

Our attendance at the Samsung Global SSD Summit in South Korea a few months back brought us our first glimpse of a new standard in ultrabook storage performance. At the Summit, the Samsung XP941 M.2 PCIe SSD was displayed reaching 1GB/s transfer speeds and Apple has since released their 2013 MacBook Air which has a customized variation of the XP941; this attaining native performance of 794MB/s. Most recently, Sony released their newest Vaio Pro 13 which also appears to have the XP 941 installed and there is no doubt this ‘trickle effect’ of distribution will become a waterfall soon enough. For the first time, even our request for XP941 review sample was put on hold as Samsung can’t seem to keep up with demand.

Up until recently, Patriot Memory seemed to have moved back from the SSD scene and become focused on phone accessories and portable devices for their retail makeup. Today is a new day, however, and Patriot enters the SSD arena once again. Read on as we put the new 480GB Patriot Ignite to the tes in our first review of a Patriot SSD for some time.
As with many third-party SSDs in previous years, Patriot’s drives have typically been SandForce driven. Recently, Phison has become recognized as a solid competitor in the SSD controller game through their offering of great performance at a decent price. The end result seems to be a much closer look at Phison by SSD manufacturers, Patriot included with the introduction of their new Ignite SSD family.

The SSD world has just taken a massive step forward with the unintended displaying of LSI SandForce next generation flash storage processor, Codenamed GRIFFIN, at Computex this week. Where other websites were noticing the incredible 1.6TB capacity of this SSD, The SSD Review observed that it is a single chip design, LSI SandForce driven, and capable of speeds of 1800MB/s read and write with 200,000 IOPS, all in a typical notebook 2.5”design! Our later attempts to have the story refuted as a mistake in specifications met with negative results and this discovery indeed seems to be 100% authentic. Such performance has guaranteed once again that the original SandForce team, alongside with LSI, has once again made an enormous technological jump in the world of SSDs!
