Geared toward servers and data centers, the Edge Boost Server 7mm SSD utilizes an enterprise-level LSI-SandForce controller to achieve strong read/write and IOPS speeds. The SATA 6 Gb/s interface is rated to achieve up to 560 MB/s sequential reads and 530 MB/s sequential writes (240GB model — other capacities vary). Random 4K read speeds are stated as 45,000 IOPS, with random 4K write speeds of 80,000 IOPS (240GB model — other capacities vary).

Our attendance at the Samsung Global SSD Summit in South Korea a few months back brought us our first glimpse of a new standard in ultrabook storage performance. At the Summit, the Samsung XP941 M.2 PCIe SSD was displayed reaching 1GB/s transfer speeds and Apple has since released their 2013 MacBook Air which has a customized variation of the XP941; this attaining native performance of 794MB/s. Most recently, Sony released their newest Vaio Pro 13 which also appears to have the XP 941 installed and there is no doubt this ‘trickle effect’ of distribution will become a waterfall soon enough. For the first time, even our request for XP941 review sample was put on hold as Samsung can’t seem to keep up with demand.

As with many third-party SSDs in previous years, Patriot’s drives have typically been SandForce driven. Recently, Phison has become recognized as a solid competitor in the SSD controller game through their offering of great performance at a decent price. The end result seems to be a much closer look at Phison by SSD manufacturers, Patriot included with the introduction of their new Ignite SSD family.
The SSD world has just taken a massive step forward with the unintended displaying of LSI SandForce next generation flash storage processor, Codenamed GRIFFIN, at Computex this week. Where other websites were noticing the incredible 1.6TB capacity of this SSD, The SSD Review observed that it is a single chip design, LSI SandForce driven, and capable of speeds of 1800MB/s read and write with 200,000 IOPS, all in a typical notebook 2.5”design! Our later attempts to have the story refuted as a mistake in specifications met with negative results and this discovery indeed seems to be 100% authentic. Such performance has guaranteed once again that the original SandForce team, alongside with LSI, has once again made an enormous technological jump in the world of SSDs!
