External storage solutions are all the rage as of late and they are reaching performance and capacity heights that we have never seen before. Yesterday, we spoke of technology advancing to the point that we could carry our entire computing environment with us and boot it from any PC and today, we can do that with both Windows and Mac systems. To be useful though, external storage needs to have a few characteristics that we still hasn’t become the norm. USB 3.0 is a must as trying to work on a USB 2.0 system might be cognizant of trying to wade through a thick pool of mud and having an SSD present in the device is key to the performance USB 3.0 speaks to, albeit Thunderbolt would be ideal but has yet to really become mainstream. As much as many not consider it, looks also play a large part and that leads us right into our analysis of the OWC Envoy Pro 240GB external storage SSD that we are examining today.

The key difference this time around, however, is the selection of MLC NAND. As the name indicates, the Vertex 3.20 uses 20nm MLC NAND compared to the larger 25nm / 34nm variants found on the original Vertex 3. It's part of a market-wide push for smaller flash across the board. That aside, everything else under the hood remains virtually the same although LSI now owns SandForce.

Seagate has recently re-branded their consumer storage products, formerly named Barracuda, in time for the launch of their 15th-generation. The 4TB Seagate Desktop HDD (OEM model ST4000DM000, retail kit STBD4000400) features a SATA 6Gb/s interface with Native Command Queueing (NCQ). Eight data heads read and write to four 1GB disc platters which enable 625Gb/in2 areal density. Cached by 64MB DRAM, this 5900 RPM hard disk drive is specified to move files at 180 MB/s sustained data rate. In this article, Benchmark Reviews tests performance and explores new features on the 4TB Seagate Desktop HDD.

SanDisk has done a really nice job on the Marvell 88SS9187 controller firmware by squeezing out some great performance. Of course SanDisk has a great deal of expertise when it comes to flash memory storage solutions and holds over 4,500 patents. We saw sequential reads hit a touch over 520MB/s and writes clear the 520MB/s mark on the larger SanDisk Extreme II drives...

Corsair’s Voyager Air is a sleek wireless media sharing device that I feel nailed this concept down quite nicely. The product itself is quite stylish, while the software is fairly easy to use. Holding a 6200 mAh battery and having a rating of 7 hours of HD streaming, I found this number to be fairly accurate. I was pleased to see that Corsair included a car adapter, which will help ensure you don’t run out of a charge while on the road. The other included accessories and pouch were also great...

Up for review today I have the Team Group Color Turn E902 32gb USB 3.0 flash drive. Yes I know it’s just a flash drive, they’ve become very commonplace but they’re also indispensable, at least they are in my opinion. This drive from Team Group runs off the UBS 3.0 interface so you can expect fast read and write speeds and from my testing and comparison you’ll get them for sure. I’ve tested the drive on both USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 interfaces and it performs extremely well on both, so read on to learn more…
