We can conclude from our price comparison tool that SSDs with capacities of 120/128 GB and 250/256 GB are by far the most popular. It's not really a surprise, as 60 and 64 GB drives are almost too small to be really useful. You could fit Windows 7 and a couple games, and that's about it. Not only that, smaller capacity SSDs are slower than the larger ones, simply because there are less flash chips that can be accessed simultaneously. SSDs with a capacity of 480 and 512 GB are less popular because of the very high prices. Not many consumers feel like spending £420 or more for just storage. We asked all SSD manufacturers to send us a number of samples with capacities between 120 and 256 GB and a SATA 600 interface, and we ended up with 48 different solid state drives for our round-up.

For a storage reviewer, there is no better discovery than something that cuts the time of storage reviews as most can take a week or longer. We first spoke of this in 2010 when we reviewed the Vantec External Dock which didn’t quite meet our needs. This report examines the HighPoint 5322 Dual eSATA 6Gbps External Dock, along with their RocketRAID 2711 6Gbps RAID card and, to promote this gear as being a game changer just may be an understatement.

We are witnessing an increasing number of applications of the Thunderbolt technology. After Apple, Promise and LaCie, now Western Digital is launching a product that takes advantage of this lightning fast connection technology in the shape of the WD My Book Thunderbolt Duo. We tested the 4TB version of WD's new external hard drive.

On the PCSTATS test bench is the finest 1.0TB example Western Digital has to offer from its Caviar Black series. The Western Digital WD1001FALS has a capacity of 1 TeraBytes (1,000 GB) and is equipped with an industry standard 32MB cache. The three platters beneath its shiny metal exterior rotate at 7,200RPM and have a density of 333GB, so this 3.5" SATA II HDD should come close to attaining is listed sustained transfer rate of 106MB/s in PCSTATS' benchmark set
