Today we are unboxing another solid state drive. This time it is the Patriot Pyro SE, which is Patriot’s 3rd SATA 6GB/s drive. Their Wildfire drive uses Toshiba toggle memory, the original Pryo uses asynchronous memory and this drive will be using synchronous memory. This drive still features the SandForce SF-2281 controller and has read and write speeds of 550MB/s and 520MB/s respectively. Read on to check out our unboxing and overview of the 120GB version.

For today’s review we will check out Synology’s top of the line two bay network attached storage solution – the DiskStation DS712+. This machine features dual Gigabit LAN which provides read speeds of up to180.91MB/sec and writes at 105.59MB/sec when using Link Aggregation under RAID 0 configuration. This box uses a low power Intel Atom processor which makes the machine both powerful in its class and energy efficient; you can easily replace a PC sized server with a Synology NAS Server running on your home or work network.

Corsair's Flash Voyager GS carries tons of storage capacity and performance, but at what cost? Let's dive in and take a close look now.

On the test bench today is Plextor's PX-B310U external Blu-ray drive. In addition to Blu-ray playback (but not burning), this full sized external ODD, which connects to the PC over USB2.0 cable, doubles up as a DVD and CD burner. The PX-B310U supports DVD reading and writing in both the + and - formats, as well as reading and writing to DVD-RAM and Dual-Layered DVD discs.

Even the fastest networks can seem slow when you have to transfer large files from one computer to another computer, and short of physically moving hard drives between computers a network was really the fastest option available. USB3 is destined to change our perceptions regarding the speed, especially when it comes to connected storage.

The trend of portable storage devices shrinking in size has been occurring since their creation. As the hard drive technology has improved dramatically over the last few years the size has decreased impressively, although the capacity increase is more impressive.

Since their launch, USB3.0 flash drives have been one of those items that any avid enthusiast has had to have in their portfolio of tech gadgets, but when we get down to the simple facts of what they have to offer over any other USB based flash drive, 99% of the time I would guarantee that it’s the higher capacity and read speeds that make them attractive. When we look at the bigger picture, it is easy to see why these two details make these flash drives desirable. With the amount of data that we are wanting to move around growing exponentially, being able to move large volumes of data in one hit and being able to transfer content to and from the drive quickly is key. There is though one problem that the vast majority of these drives have in common and that is all-round read performance. Being able to say you’ve got fast sequential speeds is one thing, but when we move down the ladder to the smaller file sizes, we soon start to see things not looking so great – especially when compared to the read performance figures that are available.

OnTop Technologies has attempted to combine a wearable, jewelry-like USB Flash drive with ample capacity and speedy data transfer rates with their Turbojet Whisper flash drive. The question is, have they succeeded? We take a look at the 4GB TurboJet Whisper and see how it performs and looks when you wear it.

Comay's Pluto SC3 features an LSI SandForce 2481 controller in tandem with Intel 24nm MLC NAND. With enterprise class features, such as host power-loss protection and enhanced data security, and a low price point, this will make for a good option for the value-conscious.

Just when you thought there was nothing new when it comes to external hard drives, Seagate has found a new angle with their GoFlex Turbo 750GB USB 3.0 hard drive - something extra special that most folks don't even consider until it's too late - disaster recovery protection. It all stems from Seagate's philosophy that it's not the hardware that is important - it's your data.
