Synology have been one of the key players in the Network Attached Storage Devices for some time now, and each new DiskStation model is eagerly anticipated. The DS214 is no exception with it first being teased at Computex in June of this year, along side its more powerful DS214+. This release also ties in with the latest update to the DSM Operating system; version 4.3.

Today Synology are launching the latest of their Home/Small Office DiskStations, the DS213j. A 2 drive NAS it offers a balance of features and performance which should appeal to those looking for their first external storage device, or those looking to upgrade from an older model with more basic functionality

The DS213j continues Synology's tradition of offering much more than the traditional NAS server. The DS213j would be well suited for those interested in a "set it and forget it" installation. For a few hundred dollars you can afford to fill this device with two drives, ensuring your digital family photos and videos are protected in the event of a crash.

The new DS213air NAS from Synology is quite an interesting product, offering a WiFi interface that can be used as a wireless hotspot, a wireless router or to join a wireless network. Besides the good performance on wired LAN, we can also enjoy the DSM 4 interface, which is really easy to use. The price, however, is a bit high so we would recommend it more in small business environments rather than for homes.

As things are right now consumers are divided into two separate categories, the ones who support that building your own server from old or new computer parts is the way to go if you want power and the ones who'd rather purchase an standalone NAS server and be done without having to go the extra mile. Personally i think that each solution has both pros and cons with NAS servers getting slightly ahead not only because they are ready to use right from the box with all the applications anyone could wish for pre-installed but also due to their small size and very low power consumption. Of course for people who also want to use the server for games it goes without saying that a normal PC/HTPC is suited for the task. Now for the past 12 months we've covered quite a few NAS server solutions by both QNAP and Thecus but today we will be covering an NAS server from Synology a name we haven't seen in a while and since we have managed to secure a brand new DiskStation DS213+ for our giveaway it only makes sense for us to show all of you what will end up in the hands of our lucky winner.
