The AS SSD and Iometer benchmarks prove that the Vertex 4 is a speed devil, especially when writing. In PCMark7, the benchmark closest to real-life, the Vertex 4 is not quite as impressive and more in line with other modern Serial ATA 600 SSDs. This is not a new phenomenon. There is very little difference between most modern SSDs during normal daily use.
Synology is one of the most innovative NAS manufacturers. Moreover, the firmware is not so much firmware as it is a fully fledged operating system, which is especially true for the latest version (DSM 4.0). We take a look at three Synology NAS devices - the DS212j, the DS212, and the RS212.

There is a glass ceiling in the world of NAS devices, and like all glass ceilings it's not that obvious until you bang your head against it a few times. The standard-issue network interface in the IT world is a one Gigabit Ethernet connection. Convert bits to bytes and you end up with a less impressive sounding 125 MB/s interface. Western Digital went with a black plastic casing on the My Passport 2TB that is adorned with a circular pattern and the WD logo and product name. The My Passport is rather small and measures in at just 111mm x 82mm x 21mm or 4.37" x 3.24" x 0.82" with a weight of eight ounces. This might sound large to some, but it isn't much bigger than an Apple iPhone 4S and easily fits in your pocket unless you are wearing skinny jeans...

LSI’s new PCIe 3.0 HBA and MegaRAID offerings promise oodles of extra performance above and beyond the limitations imposed by PCIe 2.0.
