Back on March 2011, Seagate debuted their original Barracuda XT 3TB hard drive, model ST33000651AS, which used five platters to supply 3000 gigabytes of capacity over a SATA 6.0 GB/s interface. Seven short months later, they've returned to introduce a replacement: the Seagate Barracuda 3TB hard drive ST3000DM001, which features the same 6 GB/s interface and 64MB cache buffer but now utilizes only three 1GB density platters. Seagate has also introduced a number of refined technologies to help improve overall hard drive performance, including: dual core 40nm processor technology, DDR2 DRAM buffer, and refined caching algorithms. By reducing disc platters from five to three, it prolongs servo motor life and reduces heat output. Benchmark Reviews compared these two hard drives, to see exactly what's been gained.

OCZ has just released a performance solution for the hard drive user that wants to keep their hard drive yet gain the performance of an SSD. The SSD Review evaluated the OCZ Synapse Cache SSD and found its performance to match that of most upper tier solid state drives with a 14 second boot time to match. Our review is detailed, includes photos and test results and we think the Synapse Cache just might be a hit with the consumer SSD crowd, especially in this time of higher HDD prices.

The Samsung Solid Immerse is a sturdy and rugged mobile phone for those with a more adventurous side and who prefer to spend time outdoors. And no, I don’t mean leaving the computer to go to McDonalds…

OCZ are back with yet another model in their SSD family and this time we see the results of using a controller which is based on Indilinx technology, something which hasn't really been present in high end drives for some time now. We'll be putting the Octane SSD through a selection of tests including real world and synthetic to see how it compares to models using the latest Samsung, Marvell and Sandforce controllers.

Benchmark Reviews has previously tested the Patriot PyroSE, a second-generation SandForce SF-2281 solid state drive, which is considered their standard-IOPS enthusiast storage solution. Now we return to test the Patriot Pyro SE, which pushes the throttle on synchronous NAND flash for the best operational performance possible. Patriot rates the Pyro SE to deliver SATA 6Gb/s read speeds up to 550 MB/s with 4K aligned operations reaching 85,000 IOPS. In this article Benchmark Reviews tests the Patriot Pyro SE SSD, 240GB model PPSE240GS25SSDR, against the leading competitors to find out just how much speed and performance this new solid state drive really offers.

Samsung has joined the ranks of SATA III SSDs with their new 830 Series drives, following up on their impressive 470 Series. They're sleek and black with performance that will grab your attention and a nice bundle to boot. Will it be enought to stave off the likes of SandForce, Marvell and Indilinx? Check out the article to find out.

storage space is the one thing computers will never have enough of. Yet as hard drives slowly grow into single-digit Terabyte territory, a single architectural decision implemented years ago makes it impossible for most PCs to even recognize HDDs larger than 2.1TB in size! On the PCSTATS test bench today is Seagate's 3TB, 6Gb/s SATA III Barracuda XT hard drive which gets around the 2.1TB desktop storage capacity limitation by creating two partitions (2.1TB + 0.9TB) with the aid of Seagate's free DiskWizard software.
