With the amount of computers in households rising at an extreme rate, an easier way of sharing files between computers is definitely needed. Normally you’d have to go about setting up shared folders across the network, which, as some of you probably know, is not the most reliable system. Well, today we have the Synology DS212 NAS to review which will definitely make your lives easier if you’re looking for a simple way to share files across your home network.

The DS212 NAS Server from Synology is a feature rich product with good performances, which integrates their own DSM (DiskStation Manager), really easy to use, with applications like Audio Station, Photo Station, Download Station and can be used as a mail server, to host websites and more. The enclosure is actively cooled and the HDDs can be easily removed from inside the product by pulling out the trays (however, the HDD installation is not screwless, the disks needing screws to be mounted onto the trays).

The Synology products I've seen so far tend to excel in the ease of use category. I would be comfortable dropping a DS212 off at my mother's house and letting her sort the installation and connections. I couldn't say the same thing about the typical QNAP or Thecus products I've tested in the past. Those products are easy for TweakTown readers to setup, but nothing like the Synology DS212.
A large reason for that is the way Synology configures their software layer. The QNAP and Thecus products are more tech based while the DS212 is more laymen, like a toaster, you get a couple of dials and a big lever to pull before everything works exactly like you want it to. Users looking to go head on into technology bliss still have all the other options to fine tune their NAS appliance, but it isn't a requirement.

While the DS210j was a nice simple server, there are people that require more horsepower from a dedicated storage and application server. Synology has just released the DS211 which doubles the speed and memory from the older, SOHO targeted, unit. The DiskStation Manager 3.0 software rounds out the product for a smash hit.

Synology have launched two new products this week, the DS411j which we reviewed several days ago and the DS211 which we are looking at today. The DS411j is a quad drive NAS system supporting up to 8TB and the DS211 is a higher performance dual drive NAS offering a maximum of 4TB.

A NAS is a NAS, right? Not so with the DS210j from Synology. For the DS210j, NAS means Network Application Server, Move over devices that only give you shared folder support, the DS210j offers all the functionality of a x86 box in a small and neat package. The DiskStation Manager software brings it all together in a tight package.

If you’ve not heard of Synology before, it’ll probably be because they only make NAS devices (for home and office), and you’ve not really looked into any. The reason I say you won’t have looked into any, is because Synology are quite a big name in the NAS world, so you’d have been hard pressed to miss them.

Do you remember the ONE big thing you wanted every year? You saw commercials about it and told your friends about all of its features, and how you were going to use it. I just got mine, the Synology Disk Station 210+, and I'm not the only one, Synology is so excited about it, it's the first item on their homepage. Find out why we are so excited about the DS210+ and why you should be too.

The Synology DS209 is an impressive device. Right from the get-go it has a very simple and sleek appearance with the white chassis accented by the black control panel. The Synology DS209 is no doubt fast, faster than any other 2 drive NAS that I've ever worked with.
