Earlier this year we saw OCZ release the Vertex 4 and Agility 4 SSDs, a mix of Marvel and Indilinx inside they offered some impressive performance along with OCZs decent software suite and excellent support. Today sees the first product to market which combines the Indilinx and PLX teams knowhow. The Vector series of SSDs is, other than NAND flash, a 100% in house design and we will be putting it up against the best drives currently available from Samsung, Intel and OCZ themselves.
Knowing that the Vertex 450 was going to be very similar to the Vector series drives, we already had an idea of what we would see on the test bench. We certainly weren't disappointed with performance that lived up to the storied Vertex name. Specifically, we love seeing the consistent performance without the dips we've been so accustomed to seeing with the SandForce drives. The Indilinx Barefoot 3 controller is proving itself to be amongst the best available and frankly SandForce (LSI) needs to step their game soon if they wish to keep pace with what we are seeing from numerous other controllers...
The DS212 NAS Server from Synology is a feature rich product with good performances, which integrates their own DSM (DiskStation Manager), really easy to use, with applications like Audio Station, Photo Station, Download Station and can be used as a mail server, to host websites and more. The enclosure is actively cooled and the HDDs can be easily removed from inside the product by pulling out the trays (however, the HDD installation is not screwless, the disks needing screws to be mounted onto the trays).
The Agility 4 from OCZ has its low price as the main selling point. About £160 for a 256 GB SSD is very competitive, but OCZ isn't the only manufacturer of solid state drives that wants a piece of the pie. The Crucial m4 and Samsung 830 cost about the same. We put the three affordable SSDs side-by-side so you can see how they compare here. Overall the Samsung 830 comes out on top, it has the best performance especially when you look at the most important benchmark (PCMark 7). So if you are looking for an affordable 256 GB SSD, we would right now recommend the Samsung 830 and not the Agility 4. However, the SSD landscape is evolving rapidly, so keep an eye on prices.
