Today we are unboxing another solid state drive. This time it is the Patriot Pyro SE, which is Patriot’s 3rd SATA 6GB/s drive. Their Wildfire drive uses Toshiba toggle memory, the original Pryo uses asynchronous memory and this drive will be using synchronous memory. For today’s review we will check out Synology’s top of the line two bay network attached storage solution – the DiskStation DS712+. This machine features dual Gigabit LAN which provides read speeds of up to180.91MB/sec and writes at 105.59MB/sec when using Link Aggregation under RAID 0 configuration. A few weeks back, Crucial sent us one of their new V4 SSDs to check out and, much to our surprise, we discover that it is an SSD based on a Phison controller and it is SATA 2. To new SSD users, this may not seem like much but we were a bit surprised as Crucial/Micron and Marvell seem to fit like ice cream and apple pie. In fact, I can’t think of Crucial/Micron using anything but the Marvell controller previous to this.
Though the flash drive doesn’t have the classic OCZ cheesegrater heatspreaders, it is completely clad in what looks to me to be lightly-powdercoated aluminum. Which makes it one of the toughest, if simple, flash drives I’ve ever used. The charcoal body has its decorations but nothing that stand out over the blazing orange activity light.
