Our final review in the M550 family brings us face-to-face with the 512GB model. With 128Gb NAND like the 1TB model, this one should perform really well.
Storage

The new SATA-Express standard may be just around the corner both in terms of compatible mainboards, cards and drives but that obviously isn't reason enough to stop most SSD manufacturers from launching their next generation models based on SATA III. The list of names is quite long but as expected the main players like Kingston, Toshiba, Samsung, Crucial, Corsair and OCZ are the first ones to do so (and the ones that interest us the most since they have the largest piece of the market). A few days ago we had the chance to test the Q Series Pro 256GB SSD by Toshiba and although far from excellent it did provide surprisingly good read & write performance at a very tempting price tag. Today we'll be taking a higher end SSD model for a ride to see how well it does the brand new M550 256GB by Crucial.

The Crucial M500 struggled to be competitive performance wise after only a few months of being on the market. This meant that even though the M500 was only introduced about a year ago Crucial needed to give it's SSDs an update. With the introduction of the M550 this much needed update is finally here.

By the time this report of the new Crucial M500 960GB 6Gbps SSD is published, Crucial will have succeeded in the most significant SSD release of 2013. Not only is a 1TB SSD finally available to the consumer, but also, Crucial guarantees M500 success with a price point that could create ‘price panic’ in retail SSD sales. They have gone further though. Without a premium, Crucial has included key enterprise features in the M500 that make the M500 hard to match.
Storage
Today we see Crucial attempt to drive the SSD market forward with the introduction of a SSD which has a capacity up to 960GB (so the best part of 1TB) while maintaining a price point which competes with 512GB models from the likes of Samsung and OCZ. Can the new M500 compete in performance as well as cost? In a selection of synthetic and real world tests we find out.

It has been almost a year since Crucial/Micron introduced their new M500 family and, with that, came the news of what we then termed as a new Crucial M500 NGFF SSD that would be introduced to retail consumers. Today, many are now searching for high-capacity M.2 SSDs both for their purchase and upgrade of new M.2 SSD contained systems, and as a replacement to current systems containing M.2 SSDs. There are absolutely no M.2 retail SSDs available for purchase as we write this report, however, our receipt and review of the first Crucial M500 M.2 SSD just may signal change in the very near future.

The Tera-Era has begun! Crucial leverages its 20nm NAND flash to achieve a major milestone, the first consumer 2.5" SSD to reach 1TB. Since parent company Micron owns the flash fab, the price is much better than you might expect.

The Crucial M500 doesn't set any new benchmark records, but that's also not what Crucial set out to do. Nevertheless, the Crucial M500 480 GB is one of the fastest SSDs in this segment. Moreover, the Crucial M500 480 GB has a very competitive price. Crucial has indicated that prices will likely go down even more in the coming weeks and months. And if they want to go toe-to-toe with the Samsung 840 (not Pro), that additional drop will be necessary. On the other hand, the benchmark scores show that the Crucial M500 480GB is slightly faster than the Samsung 840 500GB on average.
