While we’ve reviewed a few media hubs and media pc equivalents recently, this isn’t always what people want. Sometimes they want something that sits away from the lounge area but still provides content. Synology have something that does just that, but also a lot more. This NAS isn’t for the faint of heart; the DS411J is packed full of multi-tasking ability. Media server, FTP, torrents, internet radio, iTunes and more.

Synology released a few new NAS boxes yesterday and today I’ve got the DS211 for review. The DS211 features the new DSM3.0 operating system which makes life much easier when you’re trying to work with it. The new interface, for lack of a better description, is similar to Windows really, it allows you to open several things at once to multi-task. The DS211 is meant to be more of a budget minded NAS box that provides all of the features of higher cost boxes but just at a lower price really. So read on to learn more about it.

Today we look at a very attractive pairing from Synology, the DS1010+ scalable 5 bay All-in-1 NAS server for small business users and the DX510 expansion unit which delivers another five hard drive bays for a two fold increase in capacity. These units combined allow for 20TB of storage which will more than satisfy the needs of any small business. These are not entry level products, the DS1010+ alone costs £725 inc vat, without any hard drives included so we will be ensuring they achieve justifiable performance levels.

The DS112+ from Synology is a full feature-packed NAS like the more expensive versions but does offer only a single bay, meaning that is more suitable for businesses that do not need a huge amount of storage space. However, thanks to the connectivity options (1x eSATA and 2x USB 3.0), we can attach more external storage to it, if needed. The read-write performances of the NAS are good, but these are always influenced by the installed HDD.

Today we will be taking a look at the single bay DS112j, which is the latest model in Synology's NAS range for home use, offering file storage, sharing and data protection. We will also take a look at Synology's latest operating system, the very recently released DiskStation Manager 4.0.

Today we take a look at the latest entry in Synology's single bay NAS solutions, the DS114. Running the same OS we find on their more advanced models it could be the ideal model for the storage novice to use for their first network based device.

KitGuru has reviewed many NAS systems in the last year and we have covered most of the previous range from Synology. Today we are looking at the new flagship product aimed at the small and medium sized business market. With support for up to 15 drives via additional Synology DX510 units and class leading read and write performance this looks on paper to be an outstanding addition to their range …. but can it deliver?

The product we are looking at here, is the Synology DiskStation DS1512+ NAS. It's a
5-bay NAS box with a lot of options. It uses a fast 2.13GHz dual core CPU and is
equipped with 1GB DDR3 Memmory that can be expanded to 3GB. There are good opportunities
for connecting external devices via 2x USB 3.0, 4x USB 2.0 and 2x eSATA. The NAS box
also uses their popular DiskStation Manager software, but let us see how it performs in
real life.

The Synology DiskStation DS1513+ uses robust DSM (DiskStation Manager) to run the NAS. This software allows the user to run their own email server, use AES 256 bit encryption for shared folders, run a VPN server as well as roll out their own “Dropbox” like Cloud server. The recent release of DSM 4.3 makes this Synology NAS – state of the art. The latest DSM release offers a revamped Mail Server, updated Synology High Availability, Server Convergence, SSD caching, TRIM support, Windows ODX support, updated PhotoStation 6, a 30% faster Cloud Station with delta-updates. In addition Synology has improved their mobile apps with iOS, Android, and Windows Phone updates.
