storage space is the one thing computers will never have enough of. Yet as hard drives slowly grow into single-digit Terabyte territory, a single architectural decision implemented years ago makes it impossible for most PCs to even recognize HDDs larger than 2.1TB in size! On the PCSTATS test bench today is Seagate's 3TB, 6Gb/s SATA III Barracuda XT hard drive which gets around the 2.1TB desktop storage capacity limitation by creating two partitions (2.1TB + 0.9TB) with the aid of Seagate's free DiskWizard software.

What's interesting about Intel Smart Response Technology (SRT) is that it can designate a SSD to cache frequently accessed I/O data in a sort of hybrid RAID 0 arrangement. In turn, Windows will retrieve data it frequently requests from fast SSD memory instead of a hard drives' comparatively slow magnetic storage medium. The upshot? Intel SRT can yield like-SSD responsiveness to systems where Windows and everything else is installed on a traditional hard drive. The system doesn't require a very large solid state drive, a 20GB Intel 311 SSD does the job quite nicely.

The saying, bigger is better, is that true? Well Verbatim would like to counter that statement by introducing their Store 'n' Go Mini Metal USB by saying smaller is better. The Verbatim Store 'n' Go Mini Metal USB flash drive aims to be that tiny shockproof flash drive that surprises based on its large capacity, speedy USB 3.0 performance, and affordability for the masses.

At Storage Vision 2013 in January, SMART Storage Systems made a splash with the announcement of the CloudSpeed 1000 and 1000E enterprise SSDs. We have been patiently waiting for our chance to put these drives through their paces. In SSD time, it felt like an eternity but with our previous experience with their Optimus SSDs, we knew the wait would be worth it. Plus, SMART had a busy summer, as their acquisition by Sandisk was finalized just last week, so we will cut them some slack.
As you may have guessed, the CloudSpeed series focuses on enterprise server and cloud computing environments. Specifically, they are optimized for the mixed workload conditions that typical enterprise SSDs encounter. The CloudSpeed series is outfitted with the features you would expect from an enterprise SSD, such as error correction and detection, power loss protection, data path protection, data fail recovery and AES 256-bit encryption. SMART also throws in thermal management for good measure.

While the 120 GiB SSDs are the most popular models because of their low cost, 240 GiB models are becoming affordable, and thus becoming the preferred ones. Today, we will test the Corsair Neutron XT 240 GiB, targeted to the high-performance market. The Corsair Neutron XT SSD uses the 2.5” form factor with a height of 7 mm, makes use …

The Desk Pro is a stackable external desk drive that uses USB 3.0 technology to connect to your PC or MAC. Three capacity sizes are available; 1TB, 2TB and the drive we are looking at today, 3TB. The Touro Desk Pro ships with two distinct backup platforms. The first is a seemless backup to the external drive and the second is a free cloud service with 3GB of space. The cloud service can be upgraded to 250GB with a paid subscription.
