Another day, another hard drive review but this one is a 2.5” notebook drive, specifically it’s the Seagate Momentus 7200.4 500gb hard drive. I’ve put it up against a couple 3.5” drives as I was curious as to how a notebook drive stacks up against a desktop drive. let’s get into it…

The Vantec NexStar HX NST-330SU3 is an economical external hard drive enclosure for 3.5" SATA II drives that permits extra storage space to be easily added to any desktop computer via USB 3.0 or eSATA cable. The Vantec NexStar features a small 80mm fan to help keep the HDD from overheating over prolonged hours of use - a problem with always on external drives which forget to spin down the disk during idle periods.

The DS413j NAS from Synology is mostly aimed for homes and small offices in need of high storage space, without the need of breaking the bank to get it. The product comes with an older chassis version and runs the latest version of the highly praised DSM, which means that it comes with a lot of features and its interface is really intuitive, easy to use.

Seagate's Momentus XT is a 2.5" notebook drive of a half-Terabyte in capacity that stands out from the crowd because it contains 4GB of SLC NAND flash. The NAND flash is used as sort of a 'fast access repository' to store commonly used data, though at 4GB, the SSD portion of this hybrid drive accounts for only 0.8% of its total storage capacity. The two platter, 7200RPM Seagate Momentus XT posts an average read latency of 11.0ms, write 13.0ms. Seagate's 3Gb/s SATA II ST95005620AS drive retails for round $156 USD / £90 GBP and requires no special drivers or software.

With the rapid progress of technology from one day to the next, concepts, ideas, inventions, and reinventions suddenly turn from wishful thinking into reality. In the case of solid-state drives the burning question was whether we would see a viable external solution. Conventional hard-drives already go their external variant primarily thanks to USB 2.0; with the raw speed and performance of SSDs however, the lagging catalyst was the upgraded USB 3.0 interface standard. Of course a slue of other components were needed as well – cooling, enclosure size, controllers, design, chipsets just to name a few.
Only recently after advancements in each area did this mix come together to form a practical external SSD concoction in the Angelbird mobile SSD line. Today we take a look at two different models – the $780 Angelbird SSD2go 480GB and the $900 dual Angelbird SSSD2go TWIN 480GB (240GB x 2). We will see if the Angelbird drives are worth their premium prices, and if they can indeed perform at SATA 3.0 speeds using USB 3.0.

Hard drive docks are nothing new. They have been around for quite some time and we have reviewed a handful of them. The only thing that has really changed in the way of hard drive docks is the connections. When USB 3.0 came out we saw a new round of hard drive docks with the new, faster connection. So what is next for hard drive docks? Vantec seems to think WiFi is. It makes sense, we have so many wireless devices now with tablets and smartphones ruling our lives. So why not be able to access the information on any hard drive without having to have a USB connection on your device? This is where the NexStar WiFi Hard Drive Dock comes in. It is your normal hard drive dock supporting 3.5-inch and 2.5-inch drives and has a USB 3.0 connection, but it also has WiFi so you can use an iOS or Android device to connect to it and access your files. Let’s dive in!
