Solid State Drives are becoming more and more common. I think I big reason for this is because people realize that they will give them the performance boost that they want when added to their system. The market seems to be flooded with drives and it is really hard to choose which one to get. One of the main determining factors to many people is the price. Kingston’s new HyperX 3K solid state drive is designed to be very inexpensive as it uses cost effective NAND rated for 3000 program / erase cycles. We will explain what all that means later on in the review. This drive still sports the very popular SandForce SF-2281 controller and of course the quality you expect from Kingston. Read on as we check it out!

The ioSafe Solo is designed to allow the hard drive inside to withstand a single disaster, fire or water. This does not mean you can drop it in the ocean for a day then connect the ioSafe Solo to your PC like nothing happened. What it does mean is that the enclosure will take the damage while keeping the hard drive itself safe. With that said I am left with two choices; I can either drop the ioSafe in water or make a fire. Hmm, no competition there... When in doubt make a fire! Words to live by.

Synology is one of the most innovative NAS manufacturers. Moreover, the firmware is not so much firmware as it is a fully fledged operating system, which is especially true for the latest version (DSM 4.0). We take a look at three Synology NAS devices - the DS212j, the DS212, and the RS212.

Today we are going to look at one of Startech’s external hard drive enclosures which has room for four 3.5″ SATA hard drives in a RAID configuration. This is designed specifically for corporate users so it uses the royalty free eSATA interface exclusively rather than USB3.0. As numerous corporate users only upgrade their PC systems every few years, Startech includes an eSATA expansion card with the InfoSafe which can be installed into a PCI slot.

When it comes to SSD controllers, up until recent times LSI/SandForce and Marvell have pretty much “ruled the roost”. Other than a few instances of utilizing proprietary controllers (such as Samsung does in most of their SSDs), and a smaller player in Indilinx (acquired by OCZ), there were no other options for manufacturers to engineer a new SSD with. That has recently begun to change, as other controllers are beginning to appear on the scene. The last Corsair SSDs (the Neutron and Neutron GTX) that we reviewed back in August featured the new Link A Media (LAMD) 6 GB/s controller. Corsair was one of the first SSD manufacturers to hit the retail market, and although they have proceeded a bit more carefully than other manufacturers, they have earned a reputation as providing some of the top performing SSDs that money can buy. Their success in SSDs has shown with their willingness to explore different controllers in search of the best, as well as bringing out non-standard SSD capacities that few others offer. The Corsair Performance Pro was one of the better SSDs we have tested, and it surprised everyone as it is based on the Marvell 9174 controller, and Corsair truly found the sweet spot in its performance.

Shooting short video clips and taking pictures is something many people do on a daily basis (mainly with their smartphones) so with Christmas just around the corner it's a safe bet that the largest percentage of the global population will spend quite a bit of time doing the same but in a much larger scale. So since we will probably be doing the exact same thing we did our best to find a device that would make our lives easier when sharing our Christmas media collection with both family and friends. Well to our surprise in the end it didn't take that long to find such a device and to be more accurate it was actually delivered to us out of the blue (luck was on our side). So just as the title clearly states we spend the better part of last week testing the latest PlexEasy PX-650US Versatile DVD/CD Burner by Plextor.

Hard drives have been around for along time and they’re taken for granted I think. You can get them in varying sizes and speeds and all of them have their uses. Today for review I have the Seagate Barracuda LP 1TB hard drive which is a green drive that runs at 5900RPM and uses lower power than faster drives of similar size. I’m curious by nature so I put this green drive up against a regular 7200RPM drive for comparison, so let’s get to it…

VisionTek is an all-inclusive company that manufacturers several different PC components to include graphics cards, memory, power supplies, productivity cards, wireless and USB 3 adapters, as well as…you got it…SSDs. Surprisingly, their representation in SSD form factors includes PCIe form factors, in addition to common 2.5″ notebook and mSATA SSDs; this placing them amongst the very few that market PCIe SSDs at the moment. WE are happy to report that, not only do we have the notebook and mSATA SSD in hand, but the VisionTek Data Fusion PCIe SSD is on its way as well.

Seagate announced a handful of new products at CES 2015 and let it be known that this year will be the company’s 35th year in the storage business. Among the new products being announced was the Seagate Seven, which true to its name is a 7mm thick portable external drive. That makes it thinner than an iPhone 6 Plus and give it the title of being the World’s thinnest 500GB portable hard drive! Read on to see how it performs!
