Hitachi are classed as one of the biggest manufacturer's on the market for many products in the retail world today, and with a division devoted to hard drives and storage, they have offered storage solutions for many years in an extremely competative market.
Part of this market is for the mainstream user who wants a simple plug and play device that can house their collection of data, which generally consists of music, movies and artwork images and this is where external hard drives that perch on your desk really come into action.
Obviously a drive like this is aimed at the user wanting a nice plethora of storage at their disposal and with lots of competition on the market, we hope that this product will give a slight edge over other drives on the market. When looking at a storage drive, most people would dish out the cash on an internal drive, but external still have their uses when it comes to transportation when all you have to do is unplug a few leads and stick it in your bag to take to work or even a friends house.
Also with USB getting faster as technology moves on, and motherboards incorporating more and more ports, it means that a drive like the one we're looking at today gives that certain edge over an interal drive when it comes to connectivity.
We was half expecting this drive to follow suit with other products on the market from the likes of Buffalo and Lacie with a very standard design. Fortunately, this product has a little bit more to offer in the styling department with an 'L' shaped design that lets the drive sit upright on a desk, coupled with a piano black shell, makes this a product that people will gawp at.

We all know (or at least most of us) that hard disk drives are much slower than solid state drives and so using the second just to house the primary OS (operating system) is always the ideal scenario. However no one can deny the splendid price/capacity ratio of HDDs especially now that we even have massive 4TB units available. Personally i don't feel I’ll ever be happy at least not until we finally see drives with capacities well exceeding the 10TB mark but in the meantime they highest available capacities will just have to do. A couple of months ago we checked the latest consumer oriented Deskstar 7K4000 4TB SATA III hard disk drive by Hitachi GST and as promised back then today on our test bench we have the latest enterprise class Ultrastar 7K4000 4TB SATA II hard disk drive.

When i first started using a personal computer i remember that i chose a configuration with an 300MB hard disk drive which was not only the highest capacity drive available at the time but it also cost as much as half of the entire system. Almost 22 years later technology has advanced to a level where a person can actually purchase one of the latest entry level 4TB hard disk drives (4000000MB) for less than USD350/300Euros, currently that is since prices tend to fall. Hitachi GST has already released 3 different 4TB HDD models in the market, two in their Deskstar consumer oriented line and one in their Ultrastar enterprise line. Today with us we have the high end consumer model, the Deskstar 7K4000 (HDS724040ALE640) and as usual it will go through rigorous testing to see just how well it performs compared to other hard disk drives in the market.

Hitachi GST, now part of Western Digital, has a new 4TB, 5,400 RPM drive featuring Low-power CoolSpin Technology.

An evolution, but not a revolution - that is how we'd like to describe Hitachi's new 4 TB hard drives. The performance is excellent. With its high data density the 7K4000 is the fastest 7,200 RPM drive that we've ever tested, while the 5,400 RPM 5K4000 almost achieves 7,200 RPM-like performance. The good performance and huge storage capacity luckily do not come at a high price. They don't cost more than typical 2+ TB drives if you look at the price per GB.
The noise production is acceptable, even though it could have been lower. The idle power usage could have been lower as well, especially considering the high probability that disks like these will end up in a Home Server or NAS.

Hitachi has a nice looking product line-up of external 2.5 inch drives, we take a look at their 500Gb Portable Drive which comes with a fancy Carbon Fibre finish. Is it up to the task of backing up our vital data? Let us find out

Today we’ll be reviewing the HighPoint RocketStor 5322 eSATA drive dock. This is HighPoint’s latest 2 bay drive dock which not only features eSATA 6Gb/s, but it has two eSATA 6Gb/s controllers onboard. This allows each individual bay on the RocketStor 5322 the capability of up to a 6Gb/s theoretical transfer rate. Because of this, the dock is fully capable of simultaneous...

For a storage reviewer, there is no better discovery than something that cuts the time of storage reviews as most can take a week or longer. We first spoke of this in 2010 when we reviewed the Vantec External Dock which didn’t quite meet our needs. This report examines the HighPoint 5322 Dual eSATA 6Gbps External Dock, along with their RocketRAID 2711 6Gbps RAID card and, to promote this gear as being a game changer just may be an understatement.
