When you think about SSDs, the first names that come to mind are probably those of bigger companies, such as OCZ, Intel, Samsung, Toshiba, Kingston, and SanDisk…just to name a few. Recently however, a fairly new company named MyDigitalSSD has been making headlines, especially here on The SSD Review. Keeping the trend alive, we take a fresh look at the new 512GB MyDigitalSSD Bullet Proof 3 Solid-State Drive. Those who have wondered why SandForce based SSDs seem to have a shorter storage capacity than all others (ie 240/256GB) need not worry further. LSI has recently released code to manufacturers which allows them to remove that 7% over provisioning that Sandforce drives are famous for without a performance kick, providing the consumer with 7% more storage on each new SSD.

Have an old SATA or IDE based hard drive laying around that needs to be wiped or mined for valuable files? Maybe you have laptop and want to backup data to another hard drive but only have a internal drive on hand. If so, StarTech has just the thing for you with their USB 3.0 to SATA/IDE HDD Dock that allows the user to connect it via USB. See what we think about it in our review.

The mSATA form factor is rising in popularity and more manufacturers are releasing high performance drives to target the growing audience. Today we are looking at the latest drive from ADATA, the XPG SX300 128GB.

Thermaltake have tagged this dock with SuperSpeed, but how super is the BlacX' speed against a pure SATA connection?

I've been reporting on solid state drive technology since it made a retail debut back in February 2008, nearly five years ago. From the very start I've been a huge proponent of all things SSD, as it closes the gap between the fastest computer system components (processor followed by memory) and the slowest (data storage drive). But as speeds grew increasingly faster with each new generation, there's still one giant gap that remains: price. The cost of components has dropped year after year, but today the vast majority of low capacity entry-level SSDs still fetch about $1/GB compared to less than $0.20/GB for high-performance hard disk drive technology. In this editorial, I chronicle the current state of retail solid state storage devices.

We were kind of expecting it, but it's nice to see concrete proof that mSATA SSDs are as fast as their 2.5-inch counterparts, despite their small size. The Adata SX300 128GB scores almost exactly the same in every benchmark as the Adata SX900 128GB that is based on the same controller. The Crucial m4 256GB mSATA performs the same as the standard m4 256GB.
