Icy Dock has a wide variety of storage related products and among them are drive adapters. The sad truth is we need these devices as the PC case manufacturers have not yet made mounting of 2.5″ drives a standard. Even more saddening than that; many SSD manufactures conveniently forget to give you an adapter, which means adapters are a necessity. Add to this the growing segment of users going for lower power usage and less heat by using 5200-5400RPM 2.5″ drives in their desktops and one can see the need for adapters. Today we examine two of the many drive adapters offered by Icy Dock; with one thing in mind – utility.

Just about two months ago, we have completed a review of Icy Dock MB662USEB-2S; an incredible dual-bay FireWire 400/800 eSATA & USB Raid 3.5" HDD enclosure and today we are going to bring you another existing product from Icy Dock; MB994SP-4S. Icy Dock MB994SP-4S is not an external HDD enclosure but an internal multi-bay HDD RAID cage; able to support up to four 2.5" SATA/SSD/SAS HDDs.

With the ever increasing speeds obtainable from modern solid state drives, more and more enthusiasts are switching to using them as their primary system drive in desktop machines. Since most SSDs are designed in the 2½" notebook format however, which many desktop computer cases are not equipped to handle, this leaves users with a quandary over how to mount their new drive. Use only one or two screws to hold it? Double-sided tape? Or maybe just leave it dangling at the end of the SATA cable? For those who want something a little more secure and a cleaner looking installation, Icy Dock has the perfect solution.

OCZ Technology Group, Inc. (Nasdaq:OCZ), a leading provider of high-performance solid-state drives (SSDs) for computing devices and systems, and IceWEB Storage Corporation (OTCBB:IWEB) today announced that OCZ's SAS-based Talos 2 SSDs and SATA III-based Deneva 2 SSDs have been selected by IceWEB for inclusion in IceWEB's complete line of unified data storage systems. IceWEB leverages OCZ's enterprise-class SAS and SATA SSDs to enable its storage systems with ultra high performance of I/O intensive applications while lowering power consumption and associated cooling costs.
Today's enterprise, mission-critical applications demand very high levels of I/O performance from storage systems that hard disk drives (HDDs) simply cannot provide since they only deliver about 100 to 200 input/output operations per second (IOPS) performance. Therefore, in developing unified data storage systems that yield ultra high-performance, high reliability and availability, low power and cost-effectiveness, IceWEB required solid-state storage as these drives store and access data through NAND flash memory versus from spinning disks. In a typical industry comparison, it takes about 50 HDDs to provide the IOPS performance of one SSD, and an SSD only consumes a fraction of the power of an HDD.
After testing and evaluating competitive SSDs in the industry, IceWEB selected enterprise-class SAS and SATA-based SSDs from OCZ to enable all storage arrays in its unified storage platform with a choice of storage interfaces. Through this process, IceWEB was able to determine that both the Talos 2 and Deneva 2 SSDs from OCZ provided the best read/write IOPS performance, included high reliability and endurance tools to extend usable drive life, and leverages a product roadmap to enable growth within the IceWEB unified platform. The SSDs are also used for IceWEB's IceCAP™ Cache Acceleration Protocol, automated tiering and pure SSD disk tiers, enabling customers to provision an IceWEB unified system for maximum application performance and capacity as various business requirements dictate.
OCZ Talos 2 SSDs support a 6Gb/s SAS interface, capacities up to 1TB, 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch form factors, and are designed specifically for mixed workloads in enterprise environments. They deliver the industry's fastest transactional performance for SAS-based drives supporting 70,000 IOPS (random 4K reads) and 54,000 IOPS for mixed 4K workloads. Unlike many competitive SAS-based SSDs, Talos 2 SSDs are dual ported to provide two redundant data paths, and support OCZ's DataWrite Assurance™ data protection in case of a sudden power loss adding to the product line's superior data integrity.
OCZ Deneva 2 SSDs support a 6Gb/s SATA III interface, capacities up to 480GB, 1.8-inch, 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch form factors, and are well suited for write-intensive high performance computing (HPC) environments. Another leading performer from OCZ, Deneva 2 SSDs deliver the industry's fastest transactional performance for SATA III-based drives supporting 80,000 IOPS (random 4K writes) with a maximum throughput of 525 MB/s. DataWrite Assurance data protection is also supported.
In addition to power loss data protection, both Talos 2 and Deneva 2 SSDs feature several enterprise-critical functions not available in OCZ's consumer product lines delivering such best-in-class endurance features as minimal write amplification, intelligent block management and wear-leveling. In addition, Talos 2 and Deneva 2 SSDs include robust security and error correction in the form of AES-128/256 encryption support and advanced error correction coding (ECC), making these drives perfectly suited for a host of data center, cloud computing, web serving and data warehousing applications.

The product I’ve got today is called the i-Tech SIMDrive and it looks like a small USB flash but it has a slot on it for your sim card to be inserted into. On the drive itself is software to allows you to access, edit, backup and even export your contacts from the sim card. You do all this from your computer so it makes the whole process much easier. It’s inexpensive, and in my opinion well worth it to be able to easily access and backup your contacts.

I love storage. It doesn't matter what kind. I have stock in those plastic dresser-style drawers, and I keep 'em chock full of crap I'll never use or at the most very rarely. Any time I look at a car I check out the trunk first, and try to estimate how many bodies would fit in there. If I'm unsure, I'll ask the salesman. And yes, I have done it before. Ah, the joys and freedoms of being a sociopath. But my favorite type of storage is always those heavy bricks we call Hard Drives. I have them in all capacities, and when I want to access one, I simply take apart my external storage unit, or power down my computer and take the side off, install the HD, and then put it all back together. It's a pain in the ass at best.

One way to take advantage of this bus speed is to pair a speedy Solid State Drive (SSD) with an enclosure using USB 3.0. Kingston is one of the first to enter this market with the release of its HyperX MAX 3.0, their external SSD based USB 3.0 drive. This drive uses flash memory in place of a mechanic drive which provides advertised read speeds of up to 195MB/sec and writes up to 160MB/sec. Kingston offers the HyperX MAX 3.0 in three capacities – 64GB, 128GB and 256GB.
