SSD (Solid State Drive) units are storage devices that store files and programs just like hard disk drives, but use flash memory chips to store data, instead of storing data on a magnetic disc. Because data is stored electronically rather than magnetically, SSDs are way faster than hard disk drives for two reasons. First, no conversion between magnetic information into electronic information is needed. And second, there are no mechanical parts, so data is readily available, while on hard disk drives you need to wait until the heads move to the area where data is stored, which takes some time. In this short tutorial we will show you how SSD units look like inside and what are their main components.

Solid State Drive technology has helped transform computers into high-performance machines. Adding to the mania, 6.0-Gbps SATA-III bandwidth has cleared any bottlenecks that may have previously limited SSD speeds. Based on the Marvell 88SS9174-BJP2 SSD processor, the 256GB Crucial RealSSD-C300 becomes the industry's first SATA-6G consumer Solid State Drive. Likewise, the C300 is also the first SSD to use ONFI 2.1 synchronous NAND flash. In this article, Benchmark Reviews tests the MTFDDAC256MAG model rated for 355 MBps read speeds using the HighPoint Rocket 620LF host controller.

External drives are indispensable when it comes to transporting large amounts of data or having a means of portable storage for backup. There's no doubt that USB flash memory drives are hard to beat when it comes to small and lightweight, but sometimes they just don't offer enough capacity. The external drive enclosure we have today from Computer Geeks is a very small unit designed for a 2½" SATA notebook drive, and features two methods for connecting to a computer, either through USB 2.0 or eSATA. As an added bonus it supports powered eSATA, a new standard for supplying operating voltage for the unit over the same cable that's used for the data stream so a separate AC adapter is not required.

Good things come in small packages and the QNAP TS-259 Pro is exactly that. You shouldn't be fooled by the small footprint. Packed inside this small chassis is a very powerful dual core Intel Atom processor with 1GB of memory. The result is a powerful server capable of RAID 1 performance with little overhead loss or a lightning quick RAID 0 configuration. If you're strictly concerned about numbers, the TS-259 Pro will easily put up 100MB/s+!

Western Digital depends on the JMicron JMF612 Solid State Drive controller inside their WD SiliconEdge-Blue SSD to produce 250Mbps reads and 170Mbps write transfers. JMicron has also secured their JMF612 processor in the A-DATA S596, the upcoming Corsair Reactor SSD series, and the yet-to-ever-release Active Media Predator-X7. While the SSD industry grows daily, only a few select manufacturers offer popularly-accepted Flash NAND SSD controllers. In this article, Benchmark Reviews evaluates the JMicron JMF612 Solid State Drive processor.

NAS boxes are great, but how about a NUS box? NUS as in Network USB Storage. Cirago recently launched the NUS1000 which is sort of like a four port UBS hub for your network. The NUS1000 is like a mini NAS box that uses USB drives and external USB hard drives as the storage instead of regular hared drives, it can also be a web server, a print server or a bittorrent client along with ability to share files and stream media from it. So read on to learn more about a rather unique little gadget…

After taking Vantec's NexStar 3 USB 3.0 external HDD enclosure for a test run, I'm left completely sold. There's no way I'd want to go back to using a USB 2.0 enclosure for file storage if I can avoid it. The increase in speed is incredible, and the best part is that there's no learning curve – if you know how to use any USB device (and who doesn't these days), you already know how to use USB 3.0.

Other World Computing (or OWC) is an Apple specialty store that also offers their own branded products. The company showed up on our radar when we first started seeing SandForce controlled SSDs entering the market. Even now only a small handful of the dozens of companies that are planning to offer SandForce SSDs have been able to bring them to market. OWC was immune to whatever problems other manufacturers are having and has a product on the market now, but that is only half of the story.

At CES Cameron and I paid a visit to QNAP’s booth to take a look at several new NAS appliances and servers the company launched at the show. Little did we know that the new product lineup would be so extensive, almost a top to bottom refresh. The first of the new dual core Intel Atom products has been here for a month now and I have to come right out and say that I am very impressed. It is a good thing too since the TS-419P TurboNAS we reviewed last year didn’t fare as well as we were hoping.
