In a similar fashion to my last review of a Thecus NAS, it has been a little while since I've looked at a QNAP system, but this is not to say that stocks have run dry of NAS samples and now we're back in full swing now with another system from one of the major players in the NAS market.

On the TSSDR Test Bench today is the Samsung PM 841 mSATA SATA 3 SSD, this particular sample being the highest capacity mSATA SSD that we have tested to date at 512 GB. Unlike the Mushkin Atlas 480GB mSATA SSD that we have reviewed previously, the PM841 is the first to be offered in a single PCB design and housing only four modules of memory, each being 128GB in size.

Japanese cooling giant Scythe has become a very popular brand amongst cooling enthusiasts. Their Mugen series coolers were a great balance between superior thermal dissipation and price. However these particular tower coolers were pretty humongous in design. Times evolve and installation issues with new enclosures and especially compatibility when installing heatspreader equipped RAMs, needed to be addressed. The noise generated also remains a critical factor when buying an aftermarket CPU cooler. Scythe's latest Ashura CPU cooler is on paper the perfect harmony off a high end tower cooler, with a slanted heatpipe design, cooled down by a powerful and silent 140mm fan.

Late last year when I reviewed OCZ’s Agility 4 SSD, their Vertex series was still the highest performing model they offered. The Vertex offered both speed and IOPS that managed to just slightly outdo the Agility series. In what feels like a short time since that review, OCZ’s SSD lineup has re-worked considerably; putting the Vertex as their middle end drive, dropping out the Agility 4 all together, and introducing a new Vector line as the king of the hill high performer.

Samsung’s Series 840 SSDs offer great value for your money, but they use the relatively new TLC type of memory chips. These have a shorter lifespan than the more commonly used MLC chips, but how much shorter exactly? Samsung of course has full confidence in the longevity of their Series 840 SSDs, but there really is only one way to find out just how long buyers can expect a TLC-equipped drive to function: by testing the hell out of it.
