Micron Technology updates their product family with the new Crucial M500 solid state drive, which arrives in capacities ranging from 120GB-960GB for 2.5" SATA, mSATA, and M.2/NGFF form factors. Built upon the Marvell 88SS9187-BLD2 SATA 6Gb/s controller using custom Crucial firmware, M500 utilizes 20nm Micron-branded Synchronous Multi-Level Cell (MLC) NAND Flash components for an increased per-die NAND capacity that makes the entire more affordable. The Crucial M500 doesn't set any new benchmark records, but that's also not what Crucial set out to do. Nevertheless, the Crucial M500 480 GB is one of the fastest SSDs in this segment. Moreover, the Crucial M500 480 GB has a very competitive price. Crucial has indicated that prices will likely go down even more in the coming weeks and months. And if they want to go toe-to-toe with the Samsung 840 (not Pro), that additional drop will be necessary. On the other hand, the benchmark scores show that the Crucial M500 480GB is slightly faster than the Samsung 840 500GB on average.
ADATA is first to market with a retail product using SandForce's new B02 stepping controller. SURPRISE! TRIM is also fixed thanks to ADATA's new 5.0.7a firmware that's available for ADATA drives with SandForce 2000 Series controllers. Too little too late, or good things come to those who wait?
On the enterprise side, things were even more veiled. Unless you were a Tier-1 OEM, you had a difficult time procuring Samsung enterprise drives. Many distributors simply did not carry them as part of their line card, so small and mid-sized companies were out of luck. With the introduction of the SM843, Samsung has taken what has worked so well for the 840 Pro, namely performance, price and marketing, and carved themselves out a great niche in the enterprise market.
The Intel 525 120 GB is an excellent SSD for putting in a laptop that already has a conventional hard disk, and thereby greatly enhancing performance. The SandForce controller is starting to show its age, however, it can no longer keep up with the latest generation SSD controllers.
