Today I’ve got another USB hard drive enclosure for review. I figured it might make sense to follow another one after the Gauntlet review I posted yesterday. Today I have one from Hornettek called the Shark, yes it’s an interesting name for sure for an external enclosure, but it’s not a bed product. The Shark is both metal and plastic, the outer shell is metal for protection and heat dissipation while the inner tray is plastic to help keep the weight down.

We were already very much convinced about the qualities of the Red disks from Western Digital we tested earlier. The same holds for de 4TB model. The disk definitely isn't the fastest around, but that's not what is sets out to achieve in the first place. It does, however, consume very little energy, which is very important for disks in a NAS device, which may be on 24/7. Noise levels are also well within the margins of what we consider to be acceptable, even though other disks in the Red line-up were even quieter.

Founded in 2001, the Taiwanese company ADATA Technology Corporation specializes in memory-based products, selling everything from USB keys to flash memory cards to DRAM memory for desktop and server computers. A few years ago they branched out into SSDs, and have been competing aggressively on price/performance as SSD prices continue to fall. Today Benchmark Reviews has the opportunity to review their ADATA Premier SP610 256GB SSD.

With just a few months away from the introduction of the first 5TB hard disk drives and with 4TB models already flooding the market it makes sense that lately most of the people i know turn towards single and dual bay NAS servers/devices for home and office use. However it is understandable that not everyone can afford one of the new 4TB models and so for people who have some old HDD models lying around the obvious choice would be a cost-effective 4 bay NAS server with which they can use those drives either in JBOD or RAID modes. Thecus may not be the most famous brand name in the market (at least from what people tell me) but they've been manufacturing high quality products for almost a decade now with competitive prices which is what makes them quite appealing to end users. Today we have one such product with us and more specifically the N4100EVO 4 bay NAS server.

Without a doubt, the thing we love most about the review business is the opportunity to introduce new technology and things get even better yet when we are selected to be one of the first to introduce a product to the world…through a more detailed analysis. On the flipside, it truly hurts to have to ship back those products that you just can’t seem to let go of once you have it in your hands. Such is the case with the Kingston Hyper X Predator 512GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive, a handy little device that you can throw on your keychain and has the capacity to store more movies, music or pictures than you could have ever imagined.

Thecus claim to be the storageleader in the NAS market, but can their N4200 Pro live up tothis reputation?

If you haven’t heard of SSD caching as of yet, get ready for a technology that will definitely catch your eye. SSD caching is a very simple computer upgrade that will see your system run like a race horse without any technical ‘know how’ or need to reformat whatsoever. Follow along as we work our way through an analysis of the Corsair Accelerator 60GB Caching SSD and examine just how effective of a solution this may be for its low advertised price. It may be a move that you cannot afford to pass on any longer.

Most notebook computers include just one bay for a hard drive, so you obviously need your boot drive to also handle your storage needs. This has meant that you either had to compromise on performance or capacity when choosing between an SSD and a traditional hard drive. The Seagate Momentus XT hybrid drive is the solution to this problem.

For those users that want their cake and eat it too, how do we leverage the speed of SSD drives with the raw storage capacity of traditional spinning drives? The answer, SSD caching. Originally only available on higher end enterprise class storage, such as Adaptec’s maxCache or LSI’s CacheCade, this technology is beginning to show up in the consumer market. Essentially this allows a user to configure one (or more) SSD drives to be used for read or write cache for frequently accessed data residing on slower spinning HDD media. This frequently accessed data sitting on spinning HDD media will be served by the faster SSD drives, and the end result is SSD “like” performance with the raw capacity of traditional HDD media.

As the population of Mac computers grows, so does the third party add-on market. Increasingly, mobile computers are getting smaller like the MacBook Air and with the smaller size comes less port availability. Satechi aims to help expand the number of USB ports available to you in a small, easy to carry form that also matches many Apple computers. Have a look to see what we thought of it.
