There's no denying that the popularity of Network Attached Storage devices (or NAS Servers as i like to call them) has increased at such a degree over the past 3 years that even regular consumers purchase them for home use whether that's for downloading files from the internet or as media servers. However due to their design as complete closed systems there haven't really been many hardware components or peripherals released aimed especially at NAS servers but something tells me that this may change sooner rather than later. Western Digital was perhaps the first manufacturer to take a significant step towards providing special HDDs for use with NAS Servers featuring low temperatures, noise levels and power consumption without really sacrificing speed in the process. Well it did take quite a while for us to get one of these latest special HDD models that belong in the RED line but it was well worth the wait since we managed to secure the 2nd largest model available namely the 3TB variant.

Kingston has long been known for their computer memory, flash cards, flash drives and their Apple peripherals. Well maybe not the last category but Kingston is planning on addressing that deficiency with the release of their Wi-Drive. This new Kingston drive is a Wi-Fi integrated portable storage device that allows file sharing between iPod Touch Gen 3 and 4, iPhone (3G, 3GS, and 4G) and iPad.

With all of the capacity sizes in hand, we're finally ready to take a closer look at the Crucial M500 products. We start things off with the 120GB model, the smallest capacity size in the new SSD series.

The advent of M.2 SSDs holds the promise of eliminating the SATA bottleneck and, while it may not seem that big of a deal for the typical consumer, improved performance to a media professional is pure gold. Faster transfer speeds translate into quicker job completion which realizes increased business and higher revenue. Although we have had M.2 SSDs in hand for some time now, the thrill of the chase is always there when watching to see who will get such and such a product to market, and into consumer hands first. When it comes to M.2 SSDs, short of those of us having the ioSwitch Raijin in hand, nobody would ever have guessed…

NAS units (or servers as i like to call them) are amongst the hottest network/storage related peripherals of our time (in terms of sales) which really makes sense since they combine extremely low electrical requirements with a very small size and in some occasions even a low price tag (at least entry level solutions do). Needless to say however that these little devices can't do every single thing an regular PC (or even HTPC) can do but the tasks that they were designed to do they do a lot better (due to lower resource demands) and that's what really counts in the long run. A couple of months ago on our test bench we had the latest TurboNAS TS-469 Pro by QNAP, an 4 bay NAS server with remarkable performance (largely thanks to the 2.13GHz Dual Core Atom processor) and countless features. Still since many people don't really need that many drive bays today we will be testing its smaller brother, the dual bay TurboNAS TS-269 Pro.

‘Garbage Collection in SSDs’ is a contributed article that was submitted by LSI and authored by Kent Smith, Senior Director of Product Marketing, Flash Components Division, LSI Corporation. It’s importance cannot be understated for anyone venturing into today’s world of SSDs. Garbage collection (GC) is a fundamental process with all solid state drives (SSDs), but it can be implemented in different ways that can impact the overall SSD performance and endurance. In this article, we’ll look at how GC works, how it can be implemented, and how it relates to the TRIM command and over provisioning.

The CloudBox product from LaCie takes Personal NAS storage to the next level and we have it in our lab for testing.

After more than six months there are finally some more options among 4 TB disks. With the Western Digital WD RE 4TB, WD has created a high-performance 4TB for servers. If you're looking to fill a server with as much storage capacity as possible, then the Western Digital WD RE 4TB is your hard disk.

You get USB 3.0 in the front and back, a solid build quality, good trays for the disks and even a slot for a USM hard disk. It's really a distinguishing factor, and if you need a business-oriented NAS that will only be used for back-ups, then the Seagate Business Storage 2-bay is an interesting option. USM disks can be used in the same manner as tapes, and thanks to the SATA port it's fast. It's also very user-friendly, and using this NAS for making back-ups doesn't require a degree in IT.
