Synology have been one of the key players in the Network Attached Storage Devices for some time now, and each new DiskStation model is eagerly anticipated. The DS214 is no exception with it first being teased at Computex in June of this year, along side its more powerful DS214+. This release also ties in with the latest update to the DSM Operating system; version 4.3.

What's notable about Seagate's desktop 2TB Barracuda XT hard drive is that it's the worlds first 3.5" hard drive to support SATA-IO's Serial ATA 6Gb/s interface . The Barracuda XT is built around a four platter 7200RPM spindle framework, with ramp loading for the heads and 64MB cache.

The WD My Passport drives have been around for quite sometime now. They provide fast and easy backup and storage whether you are on the go or at your desk. Just about two years ago we took a look at the My Passport Essential SE 1TB drive. WD is back with a new My Passport drive that offers a new enclosure design, backup and encryption software, 5 color choices and capacities up to 2TB. The My Passport Essential SE has been a fixture in my mobile computing setup, but will it soon be replaced by the newer My Passport? Read on as we take a look...

Seagate's Desktop HDD 5TB, which is also known as the ST5000DX000, is the first hard drive with a storage capacity of 5TB to hit the market. At the time of writing, this drive is not yet being sold separately, but it is available as part of a NAS from subsidiary LaCie. We removed the drive from the LaCie 5big NAS and ran our standard test suite on the disk.

Today we are looking at two USB 3.0 devices from Mukii. One is a SATA/IDE to USB 3.0 adapter and the other is a hard drive dock with USB 3.0 interface. Mukii is a manufacturer I haven't heard of before, but they have a variety of products listed on their website. They literally offer everything from drive dock adapters to external drive enclosures and all things between.

We've had a look at a few different mSATA drives lately and coincidentally, all have been SandForce SF-2281 based. Now we have a turn at Transcends latest line of mSATA drives which also feature the SF-2281 controller. This sets up a nice comparison for us to perform our evaluation so have a look at what we found in our latest storage review.

Our final review in the M550 family brings us face-to-face with the 512GB model. With 128Gb NAND like the 1TB model, this one should perform really well.

Today for review I’ve got another product courtesy of our friends at Brando USB, it’s another USB 3.0 product but this one is a hard drive dock. Personally I like HDD docks quite a bit, they’re much more useful than enclosures because they’re so much easier to use. The one I have for review today though is from Unitek, and it’s your basic dock that can accommodate 3.5” or 2.5 hard drives, but of course it’s special because it’s USB 3.0 capable. So read on to learn more..

Instead of placing your old 2.5” hard drive into a slow USB 2.0 enclosure, why not try something faster. OWC offers the Mercury On-The-Go FireWire 800 / USB 2.0 Portable Kit which allows the user to take advantage of Firewire 800 speeds. Plus the clear acrylic enclosure lets you see exactly which drive is housed within the enclosure.
