Most enthusiasts will favor SSDs for their main boot drive rather than a mechanical hard drive thanks to the vast performance benefits available. However, there is still a large market for high performance mechanical drives which offer a much larger capacity for storage of large files. Today we are going to look at the latest Barracuda hard drive from Seagate, which offers no less than 3 TB of storage space.
Back on March 2011, Seagate debuted their original Barracuda XT 3TB hard drive, model ST33000651AS, which used five platters to supply 3000 gigabytes of capacity over a SATA 6.0 GB/s interface. Seven short months later, they've returned to introduce a replacement: the Seagate Barracuda 3TB hard drive ST3000DM001, which features the same 6 GB/s interface and 64MB cache buffer but now utilizes only three 1GB density platters. Seagate has also introduced a number of refined technologies to help improve overall hard drive performance, including: dual core 40nm processor technology, DDR2 DRAM buffer, and refined caching algorithms. By reducing disc platters from five to three, it prolongs servo motor life and reduces heat output. Benchmark Reviews compared these two hard drives, to see exactly what's been gained.

The Seagate Barracuda LP 2TB SATA hard drive is an excellent choice for putting together a ‘green’ external storage solution. Putting this drive in an external enclosure, or better yet a NAS, will allow for some energy savings, especially if the drive is accessed frequently. I’m curious by nature so I put this green drive up against a regular 7200RPM drive for comparison, so let’s get to it…
I think most people don’t think much about hard drives really; at least the average person doesn’t anyway. Most average people have a pre-built box computer and they just accept what’s in it and that’s that. People like me though build our own computers and we seek out the best performing hard drive we can find as we want the fastest and the best. Seagate is known for their Barracuda line of drives, they offer decent performance and that’s what I’ve got for review today.
I’ve got another hard drive for review today; it’s another Seagate model 7200.12 but it’s a slim style drive, it’s only one inch thick. The drive runs quiet and cool and it’s a decent performer, it would be great for an HTPC, or anywhere a smaller drive is needed.
