Some of you might want some extra storage and others may want to be safe and perform regular backups. The ideal solution for both is an external hard drive of some form which allows you to put in the hard drive with the size and speed you require and upgrade easily over time. This is especially true with the now quite common USB 3.0 interface which offers great speeds making backup's much quicker and more appealing to those of us who have lots of files.

Today we are going to look at two of Akasa’s 2.5″ hard drive enclosures which both support USB3.0 connectivity. These are perfect for those who need an ultra-fast SSD based external drive or those who want to make the most of a traditional mechanical drive. We will also be taking a brief look at a front bay Card and Drive reader from Akasa that supports a number of memory card standards alongside 2.5″ hard drives.

I'm finding it difficult to find anything I would offer up as a suggestion for the Thermaltake Max 5G USB drive enclosure. It supports the latest version of USB while being backwards compatible to previous generations, it provides active cooling with dual 80mm LED fans, it has an integrated support stand, and it has an easy way to turn off the fan's LEDs.

Today we have one of the 320 Series SSDs connected to our test system and will find out what it offers and whether it can compete with its main competition, a SandForce based model of similar capacity, in a selection of real world and synthetic tests.

Today we have the Akasa DuoDock 2S hard drive docking station on our test bench which lets you hook up two hard drives to your machine via a USB3.0 interface. Both hard drive slots support both 2.5″ and 3.5″ hard drives, making this product as flexible as possible. We will also be taking a look at Akasa’s USB3.0 two-port ExpressCard notebook adapter which lets users add USB3.0 functionality to their laptop without significant cost.

Portability. From mobile phones to netbooks, MP3 players to tablets, manufacturers are offering consumers more and more ways to work and play on the move. When it comes to data portability the traditional mechanical hard drive has two main competitors; the flash drive and "the cloud". As flash drive capacity has increased and price decreased the ubiquitous thumb drive has become the preferred method to store and share documents and small media files. For the more technically minded online or "cloud" storage solutions like Dropbox, Mozy or SkyDrive offer access to files from anywhere with an internet connection. Of course the speed of the cloud storage is dependant on your 'net connection.

In 2010 we were introduced to Other World Computing (http://www.macsales.com), a reseller specializing in Macintosh products. At the time OWC was moving beyond that of a simple retail / e-tail outlet and venturing into manufacturing their own solid state product line. Over the last few years we've seen many companies manufacture their own SSDs; some have been established in the SSD market and others have been a one product wonder. You would think those with history in the SSD marketplace would be the first to market when a new controller becomes available, but OWC proved that theory wrong when they released the SandForce SF-1200 based Mercury Extreme right at the beginning of the product cycle. To show that OWC was serious about their solid state product line, they also priced the Mercury Extreme at a competitive point and even held the crown on and off in 2010 as the lowest priced SandForce SSD on the market.

We've all heard of OCZ, and know of their stance in the market place but you may be unaware of some of the areas that the storage giant delve into. Obviously they gave up on the memory market so they could focus on their storage devices. Conventionally this includes the style of SSD that we are all used to including the likes of the Vertex II drive that we looked at a little while ago.

While it can be argued that larger capacity external drives can be had for $99, Seagate's 320GB GoFlex Slim drive offers more versatility in a remarkably thin and light package. It can be accessed externally with both the USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 interfaces, or it can be used internally with a desktop PC.
