The 240GB sample that we have features blistering performance rated at up to 1000MB/s read and 900MB/s write with 130,000 IOPS. This is 260MB/s read and 180MB/s write faster than the RevoDrive X2, a card that included four SandForce controllers to obtain such speeds. The RevoDrive 3 is able to trump those numbers with only two controllers thanks to new advances across the board.

No matter who you are, you should be more than aware of SanDisk, whether you have a camera or a mobile phone that takes a memory card, you would have most likely used a SanDisk memory card at some point. What you may not know is that SanDisk were one of the first to release an SSD to the general market with the U5000 32GB SSD back in 2007.

You may remember that back in October, we took a look at the OCZ Vertex 3 240GB SSD, which simply blew us away in terms of the performance that was on offer with lightning fast speeds and a decent set of internals featuring a SandForce controller.
Working on the success of that drive, OCZ have developed the Max IOPS version with a few minor touches from themselves. The development on the Max IOPS has had a bit of a revamp in terms of the PCB, the NAND used with Toshiba Toggle Flash being used opposed to IMFT flash as seen on the original Vertex 3. These little touches allow the Vertex 3 Max IOPS to deliver more when it comes to the overall I/O operations per second, which is the whole purpose of this drive.
OCZ always quote their 4KB Random Write Aligned IOPS through use of IOMeter 2008 and with the standard Vertex 3 coming in at 60,000 write, we find the Max IOPS boasting a massive 75,000 IOPs. An impressive figure to say the least, but we all know that sales hype can sometimes be exactly that.
It's drives like this that we're really keen to look at as they offer something different to the norm and get our enthusiast blood pumping again, so let's get straight into it by starting off with what comes included, as we all know OCZ always like to bundle a nice package together.

This SSD report is our first of the New Year and examines the Super Talent Tera Nova 120GB SATA 3 SSD that was announced this past December. The Tera Nova is touted by Super Talent as being their fastest yet and aimed at the Pro/enthusiast market with new SandForce ‘optimized’ firmware. This firmware (334ABBF0) provides for better boot times and responsiveness as well as enhanced reliability and data protection in the event of power loss.

The new DataGuardian USB 3.0 Flash Drive from Super Talent gives us the possibility to protect the data stored on it by locking its entire filesystem with a password; the user interface that pops up when the drive is inserted is user friendly and we can re-enter the password two more times if we got it wrong the first time.

You may remember this chart of the SF-2200 Series Client Launch article from about a year. Listed on the far left is the SF-1222, the reigning champion of SATA II, first released in 2010. Just to the right is the challenger, SF-2141. The new SandForce controller is essentially a four channel 2281 with a 64GB capacity limit. On paper the 1222 and 2141 have nearly identical performance other than the IOPS. The newer 2141 doubles sustained read 4K IOPS (from 30K to 60K) and has a 6x increase in burst write 4K IOPS. The new 2141 does still have that 4 channel limit and we'll explore what that means today while testing the new ADATA S396 30GB SSD.

The Touro Desk Pro 3TB USB 3.0 External HDD from Hitachi is a product with enough storage space (backup purposes) for most home users, provides high read/write transfer speeds thanks to the 7200RPM drive inside, to the USB 3.0 interface, and for extra value the manufacturer has included a free backup software, along with 3GB of free space “in the cloud”. The online storage space can be expanded up to 250GB, via subscription.

The Seagate FreeAgent GoFlext Ultra-Portable hard drive is more than just a portable 2.5" SATA HDD. key to the system's brilliant usefulness is that Seagate designed this hard drive to interface with a series of modular cable interface adaptors, docks and a media player. It's what you'd call, really very flexible.
