In today’s review, I am taking a look at a mechanical hard disk, but it isn’t one that is intended for your desktop system. Western Digital created their Purple line of hard disk drives to be the perfect choice for digital video recording, network video recording, and surveillance systems. On the test bench today is the 6TB version of this WD Purple surveillance hard disk.
We've mentioned numerous times in the past that SATA III compatible solid state drives (SSDs) have pretty much maxed out the performance limit of that standard (bandwidth limitations) and although that might be just in maximum read/write data transfer speeds and not continuous/constant ones (that would be nice to see) the end result doesn't really change. PCIe and M.2 based SSDs have surpassed that limitation both in maximum and constant read/write performance for a while now and although the first tend to cost quite a bit more compared to regular SATA III ones while the second are not compatible with older mainboards in the end these drives are a way out for people who are looking for something faster. It may have taken a while for them to do so but Kingston finally released their very own HyperX PCIe and M.2 models inside 2015 and with us today we have the top of the line Predator 480GB M.2 PCIe G2 SSD.
Today we take a look at the recently released Plextor M6V SSD, specifically the 256GB model. These drives incorporate Toshiba NAND flash memory and are released to target a wide enthusiast audience due to the competitive pricing. Right now this 256GB model is available for around £70 from Scan in the UK.
Consumer reports over the last couple of years have shown that consumers of all types check mostly two things when out to get a new SSD, price (more specifically price/capacity) and performance. The same fortunately doesn't apply for enterprise users since performance and endurance are the two primary concerns but i doubt there's a single company out there that wouldn't like to save some cash when getting new storage media. This has left room for strong competition even in the enterprise market so this is perhaps the only time since the introduction of SSDs (as we know them at least) that we've seen pretty much every major player in the market invest in such models. Micron of course couldn't stay this one out and since their M500DC SSD line (introduced just over a year ago) although it proved to be a worthy opponent to other similar models did cost quite a bit they went ahead and introduced the new M510DC line.
