Let's face it: DVD is on the way out as a data storage medium. Don't believe me? Do you remember when writable CDs were all the rage? I do, and I have a receipt for the $1000 2x drive to prove it. Once writeable DVDs became affordable, they were the backup medium of choice, and only recently have dual-layer products become affordable.

The Patriot LX Class 10 SDHC memory card offers guaranteed sequential write speeds of 10MB/s. If you bought an SDHC card in the last year, it probably was a Class 6. The increase of 4 MB/s means you'll be able to clear your camera's or camcorder's buffer faster and get right back to shooting.

Kingston announced the SSDNow V+ series of SSDs on August 10, 2009 and aimed the product at mainstream consumers who wanted to switch over from a hard drive to a solid-state drive. Legit Reviews did a review on the 256GB V+ series SSD last fall and found it to be using all Samsung components and was an overall solid performing mainstream drive. Kingston announced their second generation of V+ series SSDs yesterday and we have spent the past several weeks playing around with one of these new drives. What has Kingston done differently with their second generation of V+ series drives? Well, for starters they have moved over to a Toshiba controller with Toshiba MLC NAND Flash. The drive also features Windows 7 TRIM support right out of the box, is available in higher capacities and is said to be speedier overall with improved read/write speeds.

While our performance comparison was limited to only one other drive of the same capacity, that comparison drive is probably is on top of the mSATA 30GB heap being an Intel 525 Series drive. That makes is a very nice yardstick to measure up the bantam Atlas Deluxe drive. In that regard, the Atlas measures up very well with performance numbers that are very robust for a drive of this size. The maximum performance attained is 555MB/s sequential reads and 379MB/s sequential writes. This is with compressible data and, like all SandForce drives, things change a bit when incompressible data is thrown at it. Max performance drops to 200MB/s reads and 40 MB/s writes which is on par with Intel 30GB drive as it features the same controller...

While we haven't had a ton of mSATA drives come across our desk, the ones that have are pretty much the best you can buy right now. The M5M did an admirable job on all of our tests with performance numbers that were tops in the charts in many instances which was frankly a bit of a surprise given the competition...

For at least two years solid state drives have been an area of rapid growth. No other technology has increased user experience or productivity in the last ten years like what has become our 200 Dollar, 128GB SSD. For years we went through cycles of adding more RAM and faster processors while our 50 year old traditional HDD design gained a few megabytes per second of performance. The HDD let us down with slow growth and moderate performance gains. A revolving digital image of an hourglass became the symbol of the storage product market's failure.
