Patriot has ramped up their SSD product lines with their WildFire and Pyro lines that each sport the SandForce SF-2281 controllers. We haven't had a chance to get our hands on the Wildfire but the Pyro has arrived for our evaluation. Specifications of 550MB/s max reads and 515MB/s max writes for the Pyro seem to put it right in line with its competitors but will that hold true across the full spectrum of benchmarks?

We've already seen Patriot's low cost SSD offering for 2011, the Torqx 2 using a new Phison controller. Then we saw the 2011 flagship Wildfire that pairs a SandForce SF-2281 controller with synchronous IMFT flash, the current go-to combination for the best performance available. Today we are looking at the product that has been shoehorned between the Torqx 2 and Wildfire, the Pyro.

Data is becoming a aspect of people's lives more and more as of late with users needing more space than ever before and with flash drives dropping down in price as more manufacturers are developing them and speeds increasing, there is an abundance of choice out there.

Just about every memory manufacturer has jumped on the solid state drive bandwagon - and Singapore-based Strontium is no exception. We take a look at two SSDs from Strontium's Matrix and Gamma product lines.

When it comes to high performance SSDs, Kingston has been lingering in the shadows for quite a while. You really have to go all the way back to Kingston's variant of the Intel X25-M to find a true performance leader coming from their stable. Instead of focusing on expensive, bleeding edge, ultra performance drives, Kingston targeted the high volume market where good enough at a great price is the winning combination. This strategy has served Kingston well in many of their endeavors, but just like their other product lines, sometimes the lion just doesn't want to be tamed."

Lately we've been trying to reach out and make sure that we cover a wide range of manufacturers in an effort to provide you with more information when choosing a power supply. One such manufacturer that we have yet to see on our bench that we have had several requests for is Kingwin. Kingwin has been around for nearly 20 years in the DIY computer business providing a wide range of products to customize your PC, including power supplies.

Today we are looking at the new 240GB HyperX SSD drive from Kingston which is based around the leading mainstream Sandforce SF-2281 Controller.

At Computex 2011 Cameron was hand delivered a new product from RunCore that we weren't expecting. The new RunCore Pro V Plus builds upon the success of the original Pro V, but changes the script a bit by using new IMFT 25nm flash. Drives with this controller / flash combination made a lot of noise in the tech press a few months ago. To make a long story short, one SSD manufacturer (not RunCore) made changes to their build of materials list and started selling new 25nm drives under the same model name as the older 3xnm drives. The new 25nm offerings are a bit slower than the older models and also have less user accessible capacity.

There are lots of advantages to external hard-drives, but not quite as many as a purely portable drive. First and foremost it allows you to safeguard your data, those precious documents, or that music library that has taken you years to collect. Secondly it allows you to access data where ever you are, whether it is at home, school, university, sat on a train or whatever else takes your fancy that particular day. While USB memory sticks offer the perfectly compact solution for moving around data, they are rather expensive for the capacities available, especially when compared to a standard mechanical hard drive.
