Today we take a look at Samsungs first consumer mSATA SSD range which includes the first 1TB mSATA model to hit the market. Based on the 840 Evo range of desktop drives this mSATA version looks to offer the same features and capacity in the mobile form factor.

Samsung is a manufacturer that needs no introduction and they are about to release a mSATA SSD that will definitely be making waves across the SSD market, never mind the technology world. The Samsung 840 EVO mSATA SSD will soon be gracing our presence, and the performance unprecedented thanks to Samsung’s software engineering sorcery

There is no doubt in anyones mind that 2014 will be the year of the M.2/NGFF SSD, however, Samsung is about to release an SSD that is guaranteed to rock the SSD community like few others have. This SSD is the Samsung 840 EVO 1TB mSATA SSD and it, not only is the one and only mSATA SSD capable of 1TB storage available in the world, but also, Samsung has priced this SSD at only $10 higher than it’s sister 1TB notebook form factor SSD. To say that there are more than a few mSATA SSD storage based notebook owners that have been waiting for some time for exactly this type of capacity is an understatement; Lenovo Thinkpad sales surpassed the 60 million mark some time ago.

Our SSD analysis today is perhaps the most detailed typical SSD report we have published to date, and so it should be. Actually, the word ‘typical’ doesn’t quite fit as the Samsung 840 EVO SSD, that I am now using as my mainstream system drive, is pushing over 1GB/s sequential speeds and an unbelievable 685MB/s low 4K random write performance. If you think this might be magic, you would be right and this magic is within the reach of every Samsung 840 EVO purchase, performance not even closely matched prior to this release.

With the Samsung 840 Evo series, Samsung addressed the main weak point of the 840 series. The faster controller and especially the TurboWrite technology have brought the write speed to the level of conventional MLC SSDs. The low price of the 840 series remains, however. Very few companies are able to rival the affordability of these SSDs. Plextor has the M5S, but the Crucial M500 is slightly more expensive. Now that the performance has improved, Samsung's position will be even stronger.

A very short time ago we reviewed Samsung’s newest flagship the 840 Pro. The capacity we chose was 128GB because it had yet to be widely reviewed. Well, we’re back at it again and this time we’re serving up the 128GB 840 Pro in RAID 0 as only RWL can.

Samsung is the only company able to deliver a drive to the consumer that is completely manufactured in house. Samsung manufactures their own exclusive tri-core “MDX” controller and writes the firmware for it. Samsung is the world’s largest producer of NAND flash memory which enables them to keep the largest cost component in house as well. All this puts Samsung in a unique position giving them the ability to produce the product for less than any other drive manufacturer.

The most talked about SSD in 2012 finally makes an appearance. At this time there are two high-end drives fighting it out for the enthusiast performance crown, OCZ's Vector and the drive were looking at today, Samsung's 840 Pro.

Hot on the heels of our Extreme II 3 drive RAID 0 Review we have another; this time featuring our current performance juggernaut the Samsung 840 Pro 256GB SATA III SSD. This review will be our second official 3 drive RAID 0 review since migrating to Haswell.
