It didn't take LSI long to calculate the benefits of having a leading flash processor unit design team in house and so LSI, with the resources of being a top enterprise technology provider, acquired SandForce and grew the Accelerated Solutions Division. Now, run by Michael Raam, former CEO of SandForce, the Accelerated Solutions Division is wasting no time putting their combined resources to good use.
With the tag line "The Smarter Way to Faster", Nytro is the name of a new series of products designed to increase database and server transaction time. The idea of using high-speed flash memory to increase performance is nothing new to LSI.

This year at FMS 2012, we were met one day by LSI representatives who politely handed us a non-nondescript cardboard box and simply said, “Enjoy”. We had been waiting for this box for some time and new it to be the LSI Nytro MegaRAID NMR 8120-4i Application Acceleration Card, part of the trinity of new LSI application accelerating products, all of which we hope to be reviewing in due time.

The LSI MegaRAID SATA+SAS 9260-8i RAID controller card is designed for to support up to eight-port 6Gb/s PCI Express SATA and SAS RAID for consumers looking for a way to secure data and to have speed. With data transfer rates of up to 6Gb/s per port, the MegaRAID SAS 9260-8i should be fast, but the question is how fast? Read on to see our results in RAID 0 and RAID 5.

We have posted a new article at The SSD Review which we find may benefit your readers and appreciate consideration in linking this on your site. The SSD Review is a 'solid state drive' specific site that, for the most part , reviews SSD related hardware and also jumps into RAID configurations, Beginners, Buyers and Optimization Guides for the SSD user. We also have a Windows 7 Optimization Guide that has gone viral since it was first published right beside the SSD Optimization Guide.

For years I've talked about RAID tuning and even gave some examples on a small scale. The LSI 9265-8i that we are looking at today takes the ability to optimize your RAID arrays to new levels and does so with a very easy to navigate user interface. The base controller with its dual-core ROC processor and 1GB DRAM cache has become the industry standard, but LSI didn't stop there. Add on packages like LSI's FastPath and CacheCade further enhance usability based on user need.
When our 9265-8i sample first arrived we were in the process of building a super computer based on the EVGA SR-2 dual Xeon enthusiast's board. At the time LSI was having issues with a handful of enthusiast class motherboards with the SR-2 being one of them. Since that time LSI and the motherboard makers have found and corrected several if not all of the issues. There was a time though when enthusiasts were pounding their heads against the wall trying to make everything mesh as it should.

Today we are evaluating the newest version of CacheCade, a storage caching system developed by LSI for use with their MegaRAID controllers. This system aims to create the perfect fusion between HDD capacity and SSD speed, accelerating new or existing storage subsystems that are already in place.

We've used the LSI 9260-8i for the past year to test multiple drive RAID arrays. The choice was pretty clear after testing the 9260-8i against several other hardware RAID controllers since it offered such a well designed software interface and blazing fast performance. The real standout feature, though, was the software interface used to build and manage arrays.

Professionals, enthusiasts, overclockers and hardcore gamers all have but one thing in common, the need for speed and by speed i mean the best possible performance parts for their systems. Now as far back as i can remember CPUs, memory modules and graphics cards have always been the three leading hardware parts one would upgrade to get the best bang for the buck but lately with the price drops in SSDs more and more people switch to such RAID configurations with two or more units. So naturally we decided to do our part and show people what the gains are when you pair two of the latest and best selling SATA/SAS 6Gb/s PCI-Express controllers by both LSI and Areca (9265-8i/ ARC-1882) with a total of 8 Kingston HyperX 120GB SSDs.

LSI discusses several new products that make the leap to PCIe 3.0, unlocking bandwidth on RAID controllers and improving IOPS performance on HBAs.

The SSD Review has put together a 6Gbps ShowDown that we don't ever think can be matched. Total value of testing equipment exceeds $45,000 US. Top speeds come in at 2.7GB/s performance performance and over 461000 IOPS and we have absolutely pushed two RAID cards and 13 SSDs as far as we think they can be pushed. Grab a seat and buckle up because this is going to be our best ride yet, one you definitely won't be seeing attempted elsewhere anytime soon!
