After reviewed on Synology DS109j 1-bay NAS system, today we have just received another new product from Synology which is a 4-bay NAS system; DS409slim. Synology DS409slim is not really same with its sister; DS409 as DS409slim supports four 2.5" SATA HDD while DS409 supports four 3.5" SATA HDD. Besides the size reduction, DS409slim consumes lesser power and also come with cheaper price.

Today's SSD close up is going to teach us the most valuable thing we can ever learn about an SSD. This is the fourth paper in a series of articles that explain the benefits, types and components of a solid state drive and will go so far as to make up our SSD Beginner Guide. Each article is designed to be easily understood and will enable the reader to become proficient in every aspect of the SSD as it relates to their specific computing needs.

Kingwin has added three USB 3.0 devices to its product roster this year, two SATA enclosures (one 2½" and one 3½" and the DockMaster SATA HDD dock we have for review today. The DM-2535U3 is a single bay drive dock that accepts either 2½" or 3½" SATA drives. It features USB 3.0 connectivity for bandwidth up to 5Gb/s and plug and play capability. Facing competition from an overabundance of USB 2.0 drive enclosures and the already super fast eSATA interface, can USB 3.0 really surpass the popularity and speed of existing devices?

It was this time last year that we wrote about our affinity for the then brand new Vector series drive from OCZ which flaunted their homegrown Indilinx Barefoot 3 M00 controller. We had high praise not only for the performance but also for OCZ’s persistence with their Indilinx acquisition made a year or so prior, finally reaping the rewards with a finished product they could be proud of. The drive was a hit with the reviewer and consumer communities alike and the Vector effectively stole the OCZ performance crown from the once prominent Vertex line. To that end, they've unveiled the latest incarnation of the Vector drive named the Vector 150 which I'm sure they hope brings good fortune. Similar to the original Vector drive, it carries the same Barefoot 3 M00 controller but shrinks the MLC NAND die size down from 25nm to 19nm, following the industry trend. A reduction in NAND architecture generally yields less endurance but in comparison to the original Vector drive, the Vector 150 ups the anticipated endurance from a rating of a five year 20GB/day to 50GB/day which is quite an improvement. Read on to see how it performs...

One of my favorite products are NAS boxes, I’m not sure exactly why. I think it’s the fact that they’re just so useful. NAS boxes are much better than just an external hard drive ever could be that’s for sure. Thecus is a company that’s well known for their NAS systems, they make some of the best on the market. They’ve recently introduced a new line of NAS servers called XXX, the X’s stand for Xtreme Power, Xtreme Function and Xtreme Value. Today for review I’ve got the latest NAS server from Thecus called the N2200XXX, so let’s just get into it as we’ve got a lot to cover.

The product I’ve got today is called the i-Tech SIMDrive and it looks like a small USB flash but it has a slot on it for your sim card to be inserted into. On the drive itself is software to allows you to access, edit, backup and even export your contacts from the sim card. You do all this from your computer so it makes the whole process much easier. It’s inexpensive, and in my opinion well worth it to be able to easily access and backup your contacts.

SSD technology has seen some massive leaps since it was introduced in the mass consumer market a few years back. Throughout that time we have seen faster speeds, newer interfaces, and smaller designs. One drawback that has remained constant throughout is size, and it still is the major issue today for those looking to make the jump from mechanical to flash storage. Solidata Technology enters the fray with their K8 1920E enterprise/military-grade level 2TB MLC solid-state drive for roughly $5000. In terms of adding four 512GB SSDs together, it is quite steep considering it is just one single drive. That being said it is made for the industrial market in mind, but we will test and see if it is worth consumer recognition.
