Have You Ever Seen 4.7GB/s Performance Benchmarks Before? Would you think it possible from an enthusiast point of view? Our tests of the Areca ARC-1882x RAID Card, when accompanied by 8 x Micron C300 SSDs, will blow you away just as it did us. Heads up though because we are going to throw fifteen pages of tests and pictures at you as we check out both RAID 0 and RAID 5.

As the price of regular hard drives goes past silly and into the area of ‘downright painful’, many enthusiasts will be taking another look at Solid State Drives. The Pro Class TV team gives the faster options from OCZ a once over with the HD pixellation tools at their disposal.

The trend of portable storage devices shrinking in size has been occurring since their creation. As the hard drive technology has improved dramatically over the last few years the size has decreased impressively, although the capacity increase is more impressive.

The Crucial 256GB m4 SSD comes now with an improved firmware and we now get read speeds up to 500MB/s sequential. Compared to the SandForce offerings, the m4 comes with a good price/performance ratio, so we could afford getting higher capacity SSDs. The tested model also comes with a Data Transfer Kit composed of hardware (USB to SATA adapter) and software (EZ GIG IV Cloning Software).

SanDisk, creator of many things consumer has produced a very consumer friendly SSD based on mature technology from yesteryear. By giving the SF-1200 controller time to mature, SanDisk and their customers will forego all of the little issues we had on the very first SandForce controlled products. This strategy should be very good for a company whose primary market is your mainstream computing mom and dad, not the 'cost is no object - speed is all that matters' crowd that gathers here.

The latest external dual docking station by Thermaltake called the BlacX Duet 5G may not carry special features such as RAID0-1 modes but it does serve its purpose by offering blazing fast transfer speeds via USB 3.0 connectivity.

The PX-PH500U3 USB 3.0 HDD from Plextor comes with a lightweight casing and sports a professional, clean design. The performance is good for a 500GB 5400RPM drive and for added value we get three separate applications already preloaded on the HDD; the applications are full versions, with the serial numbers supplied in the box.

Solid State Drives come in a variety of sizes and from a plethora of manufacturer's but when we focus on what the consumer actually needs, it's all quite simple. They are after a SSD that is quick, cost effective and has the capacity that they need. For the mass market, 240GB upwards is still overkill, and the 60-96GB market isn't quite large enough, so for a company to offer 128GB capacities can only mean good things, as it offers an ample amount of space for your operating system and in most cases, for your favourite games.

OCZ has just released a performance solution for the hard drive user that wants to keep their hard drive yet gain the performance of an SSD. The SSD Review evaluated the OCZ Synapse Cache SSD and found its performance to match that of most upper tier solid state drives with a 14 second boot time to match. Our review is detailed, includes photos and test results and we think the Synapse Cache just might be a hit with the consumer SSD crowd, especially in this time of higher HDD prices.

We don’t find the opportunity to review as many SATA 2 SSDs these days which is why this particular report is a bit unique. We are reviewing the Silicon Power Velox V20 60GB SATA2 SSD and this solid state drive contains Hynix NAND flash memory, a brand that we have yet to see in other SSDs reviewed. The Silicon Power Website is also an interesting read as their web designer has created a ‘Review Site‘ atmosphere laying out the characteristics and test results of the Velox V20.
