The Agility 4 from OCZ has its low price as the main selling point. About £160 for a 256 GB SSD is very competitive, but OCZ isn't the only manufacturer of solid state drives that wants a piece of the pie. The Crucial m4 and Samsung 830 cost about the same. We put the three affordable SSDs side-by-side so you can see how they compare here. Overall the Samsung 830 comes out on top, it has the best performance especially when you look at the most important benchmark (PCMark 7). So if you are looking for an affordable 256 GB SSD, we would right now recommend the Samsung 830 and not the Agility 4. However, the SSD landscape is evolving rapidly, so keep an eye on prices.
A few weeks back, Crucial sent us one of their new V4 SSDs to check out and, much to our surprise, we discover that it is an SSD based on a Phison controller and it is SATA 2. To new SSD users, this may not seem like much but we were a bit surprised as Crucial/Micron and Marvell seem to fit like ice cream and apple pie. In fact, I can’t think of Crucial/Micron using anything but the Marvell controller previous to this.

LaCie recently added a new model to its line of Windows storage servers. The 4big Rack Office is positioned next to the 5big Office and the 5big Office+, and is made to fit in a rack like the name suggests. Most rack models are not exactly the most attractively designed products, but LaCie put some effort into this design like it does with all its products. The chassis is made entirely out of aluminium, and while it's intended for a 19-inch rack, it wouldn't look out of place on a table either.

I've been reporting on solid state drive technology since it made a retail debut back in February 2008, nearly five years ago. From the very start I've been a huge proponent of all things SSD, as it closes the gap between the fastest computer system components (processor followed by memory) and the slowest (data storage drive). But as speeds grew increasingly faster with each new generation, there's still one giant gap that remains: price. The cost of components has dropped year after year, but today the vast majority of low capacity entry-level SSDs still fetch about $1/GB compared to less than $0.20/GB for high-performance hard disk drive technology. In this editorial, I chronicle the current state of retail solid state storage devices.
