Blu Ray writers are finally starting to come down in price and today we are reviewing the Plextor PX-B940SA drive. Plextor have been producing some of the finest drives on the market for the last decade and their optic quality has always been a primary selling point.
Yesterday we looked at the Corsair Performance 3, the first retail next generation Marvell - BKK2 controlled SSD to hit our lab. Today we have the Performance 3's, and for that matter every other new consumer SSD's main competitor in house; the OCZ Technology Vertex 3. OCZ Technology leads all other manufacturers in SSD development. The company has put forth a vast amount of resources in this market and even all but abandoned their memory products that put OCZ on the map. The payoff has been a near two year domination of the SSD market with sales that dwarf all other manufacturers. OCZ is at this point the SSD manufacturer in which all others strive to be.
Plextor is probably best known for their optical drives so it may come as a surprise to some that they also offer SSDs in their product line. Their most recent line is the M2 series which features a Marvell controller and a 6Gbps interface. We've got our hands on the 128GB version and we'll see how it stacks up against the newest SandForce based drives.
Last week we showed you the new Kingston SSDNow V+100 that uses a new Toshiba controller and offers good mainstream performance, but the current price is quite a bit higher than what we wanted to see. Today we're looking at the new Kingston SSDNow V100 with a Toshiba labeled controller designed in cooperation with JMicron. The V100 is Kingston's new budget series that is designed to meet the needs of mainstream users.
Today we have one of Crucials new SSDs, the 256GB m4, connected to our P67 system and will be running it through a selection of real world and synthetic tests to establish how it compares to the Intel 510 series and OCZ Vertex 3. I'm finding it difficult to find anything I would offer up as a suggestion for the Thermaltake Max 5G USB drive enclosure. It supports the latest version of USB while being backwards compatible to previous generations, it provides active cooling with dual 80mm LED fans, it has an integrated support stand, and it has an easy way to turn off the fan's LEDs.

Our first LSI review concentrated on RAID 0 speed and performance and the response prompted our further testing of the LSI in a RAID 5 environment. What's interesting about Intel Smart Response Technology (SRT) is that it can designate a SSD to cache frequently accessed I/O data in a sort of hybrid RAID 0 arrangement. In turn, Windows will retrieve data it frequently requests from fast SSD memory instead of a hard drives' comparatively slow magnetic storage medium. The upshot? Intel SRT can yield like-SSD responsiveness to systems where Windows and everything else is installed on a traditional hard drive. The system doesn't require a very large solid state drive, a 20GB Intel 311 SSD does the job quite nicely.
Our review today is going to focus on the Crucial M4 512GB SSD and the most noteworthy thing about this SSD needs to be said right off. At under $1000, it sells for almost half of that of competitor new generation SATA 3 SSDs and its performance easily ranks it amongst the best in Gen 2 top tier 6Gbps solid state drives available today. Its PCMark Vantage benchmark even trumps that of the 256GB M4 that we reviewed previously.
