APH Networks reviews the OCZ Agility 4 256GB. Is it still one of the best mainstream performance drives?

If you are in the market for a competitively priced high capacity Solid State drive, then today’s product will be particularly interesting. It wasn’t so long ago that we were waiting for Solid State pricing to crack the £1 per GB barrier.

The Agility 4 from OCZ has its low price as the main selling point. About £160 for a 256 GB SSD is very competitive, but OCZ isn't the only manufacturer of solid state drives that wants a piece of the pie. The Crucial m4 and Samsung 830 cost about the same. We put the three affordable SSDs side-by-side so you can see how they compare here. Overall the Samsung 830 comes out on top, it has the best performance especially when you look at the most important benchmark (PCMark 7). So if you are looking for an affordable 256 GB SSD, we would right now recommend the Samsung 830 and not the Agility 4. However, the SSD landscape is evolving rapidly, so keep an eye on prices.

It might not seem like SSDs have been around very long, but OCZ has been a pioneer in the technology for almost four years already. They've traditionally offered several different options for performance enthusiasts, from economic yet responsive storage to premium high-speed enthusiast solid state drive solutions. While their Vertex series deliver the fastest SSD's available, the more affordable Agility family accommodates cost-conscious builders and comes available in 60-240GB capacities. In this article, Benchmark Reviews tests the OCZ Agility 3 SSD, model AGT3-25SAT3, which is based on the SandForce SF-2281 SATA 6GB/s controller and IMFT-branded async-NAND flash components.

This month we have seen the release of a handful of ultra fast Solid State Drives, and Kitguru has been on hand to review them in recent weeks. Today we are looking at the latest drive from market leader OCZ, the Agility 3 240GB. The Agility 3 has been released to compliment their recent Vertex 3 and Vertex 3 MAX IOPS drives, offering high performance but at a reduced price point.

Today we are looking at a drive which OCZ hope will find a slightly more value orientated place in the market, the Agility 3. Based on the same controller as the Vertex 3 range we still get the same great features however the other internal components have been tweaked slightly. We will be putting the drive through a selection of tests to find out how it compares to one of the main competitors, the Intel 510 Series.

OCZ have always been a well respected brand in the SSD community and tend to offer up products available to the high-end market. This came in the likes of the Vertex range of drives with the Vertex 2 and Vertex 3 giving lightning fast performance but a big price tag comes attached as well.
