Intel took the SSD realm by storm this week with the long awaited release of their first 510 series SATA 3 SSD. Although consumers were anxious for the news, reviewers had to remain tight lipped having received their pre-release sample a day or so prior and being sworn to silence until Intels release date of 29 Feb 11. We can say first hand that this was a very difficult task as Intel floored reviewers on their disassembly of the SSD itself. Situated front and center was a Marvell 9174 SATA 3 controller soldered to the SSD circuit board (PCB) rather than the Intel controller that everyone had expected.

The Samsung SSD 840 Pro is by far the fastest SSD currently around- faster than the OCZ Vertex 4, faster than the Corsair Neutron GTX and faster than the Plextor M5 Pro. Samsung also has a proven track record in terms of reliability and quality, as the Samsung 830 series had very few known issues. History is of course not a guarantee for future success, but there is no reason to think that the new 840 Pro series will be any less dependable.

The QNAP TS-469L, combined with QTS 4.0.1, wants to be in your living room. It wants to be your multimedia machine, storing the things you want to see on your television, be those things cast from your laptop, HTPC, or streaming device, or shown directly from the device itself. In this review, we’ll go into light depth on many of the features of the QNAP TS-469L, but also QTS 4.0.1, as this is the first QNAP product review we’ve done since the overhauled firmware was released several weeks ago.

The Renice X3 240GB mSATA SSD will be our second review of a high capacity mSATA SSD and follows of our recent review of the Samsung PM830 256GB mSATA SSD. While the Renice is SATA 2, with the Samsung PM830 being SATA 3, its value cannot be understated as it is only the second mSATA SSD that has reached this capacity to date. The Renice X3 is a 240GB ‘SandForce Driven’ mSATA SSD that is only 1/3 the size of a business card and under 6 grams in weight.
There have been a number of incarnations of the Force Series drives from Corsair with the first having the SandForce 1200 series controller. Hence the name. Most have been performance focused and were the Corsair flagship drives for a time, a title currently held by their Neutron GTX line. The new Force LS series is intended more as a budget friendly drive and changes things up with a Phison controller running the show that's supported by Toshiba 19nm NAND. This isn't a configuration we've tested before so it'll be interesting to see how it fares.

RunCore is producing two mSATA SSDs these days, one a SATA II model and the one we are looking at today, a SATA III unit. The RunCore RCP-V-T50 uses a SandForce SF-2281 controller and pairs it with 25nm IMFT MLC flash. At this time there are very few SATA III mSATA ports in production machines, but that will change soon. Intel has already told us that in 2012 at least 60 new ultrabook designs will come to market. Of that sixty, several will feature an mSATA interface and most will support SATA III speeds.
