AMD launch their latest graphics card today … the high end HD7950. We have analysed several partner products already this morning and in this particular review we will focus on the custom Sapphire card, which is supplied in an overclocked state with proprietary two fan cooling solution.
You may remember this chart of the SF-2200 Series Client Launch article from about a year. Listed on the far left is the SF-1222, the reigning champion of SATA II, first released in 2010. Just to the right is the challenger, SF-2141. The new SandForce controller is essentially a four channel 2281 with a 64GB capacity limit. On paper the 1222 and 2141 have nearly identical performance other than the IOPS. The newer 2141 doubles sustained read 4K IOPS (from 30K to 60K) and has a 6x increase in burst write 4K IOPS. The new 2141 does still have that 4 channel limit and we'll explore what that means today while testing the new ADATA S396 30GB SSD.
In reviewing the Samsung SSD SM825 Data Center Edition 400GB eMLC solid state drive, we understand that we have wandered off the beaten path of normal consumer reviews but there are some things in this SSD that will just grab your attention. Although it’s interesting to see that Samsung has chosen its own premium eMLC NAND flash memory in the SM825, we believe that it is the total write endurance that truly stands out in this enterprise class SSD.
With an outside temperature of about -30 degrees Celsius at the time of writing this review (That's -22 degrees Fahrenheit for those oddballs who still use such a weird unit of measurement, but we will leave that discussion for another day), sometimes, I kind of wonder where Al Gore is when you need him. Okay, I guess we do know where he is. So meanwhile Al Gore is happily tapping away in his Nashville, Tennessee mansion at above freezing temperatures, us here in Calgary could really use some warmth. A bonfire or something would be nice, as long as it is not inside my igloo house. Speaking of bonfires, a few months ago, we have covered the Patriot Pyro 120GB solid state drive. The Pyro 120GB is one sleek looking drive with the performance to boot -- a quick hop over to a popular online retailer's website shows us it is finally in the same price range as the OCZ Agility 3 120GB; its main competitor. But there seems to be something missing in Patriot's SSD lineup. If the Wildfire stacks up against the OCZ Vertex 3 Max IOPS and the Pyro against the Agility 3, what does Patriot have that competes with the vanilla Vertex 3? Without the need to come up with a completely new name, the Pyro SE 240GB we have here at APH Networks this morning is the company's answer to OCZ's Vertex 3. Enough said, let's get straight to the juicy details.
It has been a while since we have looked at a Synology product, and today we are reviewing their new RS212 NAS server designed for an office environment. The RS212 is a rack mount NAS server supplied with a replaceable motherboard and support for hot swappable drives. All the I/O ports are placed on the front panel for quick, easy access. The RS212 is designed to withstand high temperature environments, up to 45c.
Our Samsung 830 sample has some trick components, kind of like a race version of a street car. There aren't any titanium valves or exhaust, but the 830 does give us our first look at 20nm flash. The flash is of course made by Samsung and doesn't conform to traditional ONFi standards, but it is Toggle Mode and very fast. I suspect it won't be too much longer before we start to see other SSD manufactures taking a closer look at Samsung 20nm flash for their SSD products built on other SSD controllers. The last time we saw a SandForce SSD with Samsung flash was on the G.Skill Phoenix 100GB and that flash was left over from the Indilinx Barefoot era.
Also new for us is the Samsung controller with three ARM cores. The controller connects to your system via SATA III (backwards compatible with SATA I and SATA II) so it's able to break the 285MB/s limits of SATA II when used with a native SATA III chipset. We've seen Samsung controllers in the past, some of the first SSD products we reviewed were based on Samsung controllers and they were very stable and very fast for their day. Since that time Samsung has played a large role in the OEM market providing whole products to all the major players.
Today we’ll be checking out a stylish USB 3.0 portable hard drive, by a company not known by many. The Silicone Power Diamond D10 series of portable hard drives are all equipped with USB 3.0 and use only a 2.5-inch hard drive. They’re available in multiple sizes and colors to fit most anybody’s need. The highly reflective coating and unique design isn’t something I’ve seen before in a portable hard drive, so read on further to find out more about it.
A short time ago we reviewed the Silicon Power Velox V20 120GB SSD which just so happened to be one of the few SATA 2 drives that we had seen in 2011; the world has gone SATA 3. Transferraten von bis zu 100 MB/s versprechen die Taiwaner für ihren derzeit schnellsten USB-Stick. Wir haben uns die 32-GB-Variante genauer angesehen.
