Since their first SSD Intel have taken a few approaches to building the devices. Initially they went with their own controllers within the drives and it is fair to say that those drives were some of the best in early generations. Since then we have seen them dabble with updated controllers under their own brand, try out Marvell and more recently release a Sandforce based drive in the form of the 520 series.

Today for review I’ve got another NAS or Network Attached Storage box from QNAP called the TS-459 Pro. This particular model can hold up to four hard drives and features an Intel Dual Core Atom D150 processor running at 1.66Ghz and it’s got 1 gig of DDR2 ram as well. The TS-459 is truly a feature rich and powerful NAS box, you can do most anything with it from running a web server and FTP to sharing multi-media on your network, it can even be used in conjunction with IP cameras for a surveillance system. The TS-459 can also utilize QPackages that allow you to install all sorts of apps like Wordpress, Joomla and many other things for a variety of uses making it much more than just a vanilla NAS box.

Today’s review of the Crucial M4 256GB SSD comes as a ‘readers choice’ SSD review as it has made its way to our office only through the amount of e-mails received asking for its performance beside that of its big brothers and other SSDs of similar size. The common theme with new ‘Gen 2′ SSDs is that higher capacity equates to better performance. Our M4 128GB SSD tests seem to contradict this and we believe that Crucial just may have found the ‘sweet spot’ for this SSD.

In terms of performance, it's a mixed bag. Most operations like boot, frequently used file/application loads, etc are dramatically enhanced with times rivaling some of the top SSDs. However, the Dataplex software must first prioritize this data which can take a few iterations before it really hits its stride. Basically this means performance can feel uneven depending on your computing habits. Anyone not using Windows 7 is out of luck because currently that is the only OS the software supports...
