Vector 150 120GB comes with 128GB of NAND flash. Overprovisioning moves the user capacity down to 120GB, but steady state performance gets a boost.
OCZ's Vector 128GB is one of the highest performing drives on the market today in RAID 0. Now at under $1 per GB, it could be a setup to consider.
Today we will be looking at the successor to the original Solid, the Solid 2. The Solid 2 is one of two drives currently listed under OCZ’s value family; the other being the Onyx which is their bottom line entry level unit. While this drive won’t feature any of the cutting edge advancements seen in enterprise level drives, it will be interesting to see what has trickled down to the value line over the course of a year.
OCZ Technology has been in the SSD market since the beginning, offering a wide range of performance and capacity products for both the value and performance conscious user. This review is going to focus on the OCZ Technology Solid 2 60GB solid state drive; a new SSD marketed and priced for the mainstream audience.
The original RevoDrive was essentially a two drive RAID 0 array packed on a convenient PCI Express card and allowed users to indulge in RAID performance without the hassles of building a RAID array. Four SSDs in RAID 0 is kind of like the sweet spot since going over four adds very little to real world performance other than capacity.
OCZ Technology has another winner on its hands with the RevoDrive X2 100GB PCI Express SSD! It is hard not to be impressed by an SSD that offers read speeds of up to 740MB/s and write speeds of up to 690MB/s. A variety of tests were run on the RevoDrive X2 and a collection of five other "high speed" SSDs, and the RevoDrive X2 was consistently dominant.
Over the last couple of years we've seen companies try and merge the two technologies together. These hybrid solutions have come in many shapes and sizes and for several different markets. One of the first to launch was from Adaptec with their MaxCache designed for enterprise environments. LSI soon followed suit and released CacheCade and after that we were greeted with products from SilverStone (the HDDBoost) and finally there was Intel's attempt with Rapid Storage Technology.
The RevoDrive is a single expansion card that is effectively two SSDs (each with its own controller) coupled to an onboard RAID controller (configured in RAID 0) that uses a PCI Express interface to providing blazing fast transfer rates. The sample provided for review is a 50GB unit rated for quite impressive read speeds of up to 540MB/s and write speeds of up to 450MB/s.
For at least two years solid state drives have been an area of rapid growth. No other technology has increased user experience or productivity in the last ten years like what has become our 200 Dollar, 128GB SSD. For years we went through cycles of adding more RAM and faster processors while our 50 year old traditional HDD design gained a few megabytes per second of performance. The HDD let us down with slow growth and moderate performance gains. A revolving digital image of an hourglass became the symbol of the storage product market's failure.
Mimicry is the highest form of flattery and when done to reduce cost and make a product similar more available to the masses, there isn't anything wrong with it. To call the OCZ Technology RevoDrive a true PCIe drive like the io-Drive is a bit of a stretch. The RevoDrive takes the PCIe signal and routes it through a Silicon Image RAID controller. From the RAID controller the data is passed through to two onboard PCB SSDs. This should reduce latency from the RAID controller to the drives since it eliminates the SATA cables. In reality there really isn't much difference between buying two 60GB Vertex 2 60GB drives with a RAID controller and the RevoDrive when it comes to performance, but OCZ didn't really design the RevoDrive to flatter the Fusion-io or accomplish performance outside of the realm of the above scenario.
